Origins

Where surface humanity spread outward after the Long Season, deep humanity went down — into hills, then stone, then underways of the Sigkolzûl, following mineral veins and geothermal warmth. Stone does not change quickly, and neither did the people stone shaped. Outsiders later named them Kaetijul. They still say human. When they act, it is with the permanence of geology; when they build, it is built to outlast the civilization that asked for it.

Society

Kaetijul life centers on the holdfast: deep halls, forge-clans, and the long work of stone and metal. Authority rests with proven mastery — master-crafters, runesmiths, geomantic seers — rather than with birth alone. In Namuzdus, the Stonecrown Council rotates leadership among holdfast delegates; elsewhere, compact kingdoms such as Shathel keep the same ethic on a smaller scale. Surface contact is valued for trade and alliance, but the cultural center stays underground.

Institutions
Stonecrown Council

The elected governing body of unified Namuzdus — a rotating council of master-crafters and geomantic seers drawn from the major holdfasts, established at the Gathering at Three Spires.

Namuzdus Dominion

The primary Kaetijul polity from the Fifth Age onward, ruling the Echoed Crown range from holdfasts carved into peaks and underways; capital at Mosshell.

Kurnumgrath, Dôlmuzûn, And Varkgrum

The three founding holdfasts whose mountain pact at the Triple Spire first formalized the Kingdom of Namuzdus.

Shathel

A compact dwarven kingdom on the Hjemland–Silgolt margin, keeping Kaetijulhel culture alive after the Sigkolzûl heartland was largely vacated.

Echoforge Compact

A dwarven–gnomish accord with the Republic of Izheim, formalizing subterranean trade routes, mutual defense, and safe passage for exiles through shared tunnels.

Social Structure

Clans organize by craft lineage within each holdfast. Delvers, smiths, runesmiths, geomantic seers, and surface envoys each carry recognized standing; master-crafters and seers sit at the apex of local halls, and the Stonecrown Council coordinates holdfasts at the scale of Namuzdus. Apprentices and unproven youths labor under lineage elders until a first permanent work earns them full voice in clan councils.

Traditions
First Iron Covenant

Enduring craft oath of the deep halls: iron must be unmade by fire and remade by intention before it becomes useful. Traced to human forge practice, not to a locked divine midwife in current origin canon.

Stone-speech

Geomantic listening practiced by seers and runesmiths — reading resonance, warmth, and mineral logic in living rock. Central to holdfast siting and Deepmetal prospecting.

Anvil Measure

Forge-born work-song tradition of hammer rhythm, anvil call-and-answer, and strict utilitarian meter; labor, ceremony, and magic keep the same measured time.

Long Crossing Rites

Commemorative rites honoring the Fifth Age migration from Sigkolzûl to Namuzdus — arcane beacons, oceanic land-bridges, and the founding of the western dwarfholds.

Unfinished Work

Genesis-hook of the deep halls: something began a people in the mountain and left the work incomplete. Deep humanity is that work finishing itself — delving, shaping, enduring. The beginner is faceless for now; the vacancy is the point. Not a known god in current canon.

First Cut

Identity-marker: they became themselves when they first cut living rock on purpose. Craft and peoplehood meet at the first deliberate, permanent mark in stone.

Beauty Ideals
  • Weathered solidity, dense bone, and hands marked by honest labor. Endurance, spatial certainty, and the bearing of one who has waited for stone to answer are admired over surface glamour.

Gender Roles
Male
  • Often predominant in heavy delving, siege engineering, and the largest forge-works; many holdfast spokesmen and Stonecrown delegates rise from deep-mine and iron-clan lines.

Female
  • Common among runesmiths, geomantic seers, holdfast record-keepers, and Deepmetal prospectors; they frequently lead the lineage schools of stone-speech and subterranean survey.

Relationship Ideals

Bonds form through shared labor, tested reliability, and compatibility of craft temperament. Romantic unions are honored when they strengthen a lineage's lasting work; a promise made in iron or stone outranks passing sentiment.

Taboos
  • Building for impermanence when permanence was promised
  • Breaking the First Iron Covenant through careless or deceitful metalwork
  • Rushing a foundation, vein-cut, or binding that should be done once
  • Squandering Deepmetal or ancestral hall-stone on disposable ends
Xenophobia

Cautious toward empires and monopolists, especially any who come for Deepmetal by force, but not isolationist — outsiders are judged by the durability of their word and the quality of their trade, not by birth.

Influence

Namuzdus and its Deepmetal veins, the Echoforge partnership with Izheim, Shathel on the Hjemland–Silgolt margin, and Kaetijul craft exports that shape Kori-infused machinery and fortification across western Silgolt.

Traits

Appearance

Short and stocky, with dense bone and a low center of gravity suited to mine and forge. Skin runs to weathered earth and stone tones; hair and beards are thick, often worn long among delvers and smiths. Hands are wide, calloused, and strong, and the bearing is one of settled weight rather than surface quickness.

Magical Style

Kori expressed through intentional craft — forge-fire, endurance, the will to make change permanent. Tazri is bound through runesmithing, geomantic stone-speech, and Deepmetal alloys responsive to Kori resonance. Magic serves making: a hall, a vein, a blade, or a covenant meant to outlast its maker.

Lifespan

A full craft generation longer than typical Medesjul; elders remain active in deep halls and forge-clans well past the age surface peoples call old.

Physiology
Skeleton

Dense, compact skeleton with reinforced joints and thickened load-bearing structure — built for impact, pressure, and long carrying work underground.

Musculature

Powerful slow-twitch musculature, optimized for sustained labor under heat and load rather than sprint speed.

Respiration

Efficient in thin mountain air, smoky forge atmospheres, and the still, warm air of deep geothermal ways.

Circulation

Stable across the wide swings between cold stone depths and forge heat; recovery from exertion is unhurried but thorough.

Dermal
Thick, weather-resistant skin that tolerates abrasion, mineral dust, and repeated minor forge burns.
Hair

Coarse and abundant; beards and long hair are common cultural markers among smiths, delvers, and holdfast elders.

Senses
  • Strong low-light vision
  • Sensitivity to stone vibration and geothermal resonance
  • Acute spatial memory in three-dimensional underground space
Adaptations
  • Pressure tolerance in deep workings
  • Heat resistance in forge environments
  • Mineral-rich metabolism suited to subterranean life
Reproduction
Method
Sexual, viviparous
Cycle

Moderate fertility; births are spaced across long craft generations rather than rushed to fill halls.

Gestation

Standard mammalian gestation, often timed to geothermal warmth and seasonal safety in the holdfast nurseries.

Development

Slow physical maturation relative to Medesjul; bodily strength consolidates over long apprenticeship rather than in sudden bursts.

Courtship

Courtship unfolds through shared labor, lineage approval, and demonstrations of reliable craft; grand gestures matter less than work that will still stand decades on.

Interbreeding

Rare with other Julhel branches; union with Medesjul stock over time contributes to the Jaajul (Halfling) lines.

Cultural Influence

Children are raised in holdfast nurseries and craft-lineage schools; the first completed permanent work marks the passage from apprentice to recognized clan voice.

Growth
Infancy

Protected in warm nursery levels near the geothermal ways; early life emphasizes hearing stone, forge rhythm, and clan story.

Childhood
A long observational childhood, learning tool, stone, and measure by mimicry of lineage elders.
Adolescence

Extended apprenticeship in delving, smithing, or geomantic study; adolescence ends only when the youth produces work judged permanent.

Adulthood

Full standing earned through mastery and covenant-keeping; adults carry responsibility for halls, veins, and alliances meant to outlast them.

Growth Rate

Deliberate and slow; physical and social maturity keep pace with craft apprenticeship, not with surface-world calendars.

Sexual Dimorphism

Males tend toward broader frame and heavier delving build; females are more often found in the runesmithing and geomantic lineages, though both sexes serve every holdfast role.

Intelligence

Type
Patient, spatial, craft-oriented, and long-memoried.
Strengths
  • Underground spatial reasoning and survey memory
  • Metallurgy, masonry, and permanent construction
  • Oral craft lore and covenant record
  • Endurance under pressure, heat, and siege
Learning Style

Apprenticeship, stone-speech training, forge repetition, and oral lineage memory; truth is proven by work that survives the teacher.

Comparison To Human

Relative to typical surface-branch (Medesjul) humans: stronger sustained concentration, subterranean navigation, and depth of specialized craft; slower to adopt surface fashions, and quicker to abandon what does not endure. Still the same humanity — different habitat and clock.

Controversies

  • The Fifth Age departure from Sigkolzûl left Tjastad human clans as the range's primary inhabitants and divided the diaspora holdfasts from Namuzdus heartland culture.

  • Deepmetal export policy split the Stonecrown Council between isolationist and trade factions during the Stonecrown Schism.

  • Revakgol incursions and the Deepmetal Wars keep Namuzdus in uneasy, treaty-bound tension with imperial Silgolt.

  • A surface reputation for long memory in disputes conflicts with the Kaetijul self-understanding as patient rather than stubborn.

  • Whether the Unfinished Work implies a forgotten maker, or whether incompleteness is the whole truth, divides seers and secular craft authorities.

  • Surface humans and deep humans argue primacy of fire versus cut; neither preserves the shared Long Season origin.

Lore

Origin Myth

Deep humanity does not tell the Long Season as scholars would. Halls teach the Unfinished Work: a people left incomplete in the stone, finishing itself. The First Cut marks when that work took its own hands — the first deliberate cut into living rock. Scholars call them Kaetijul; common speech outside Hjemland often says dwarves. They call themselves human. They do not know the Ego/Ykheri frame, nor that surface kin share the same Long Season stock.

Habitat

The Sigkolzûl — the northern mountain range of Hjemland, running uninterrupted east-to-west. Alpine in character, peaking around 2785m. After the shared Long Season becoming, deep-adapted humans (Kaetijul) inhabited the Sigkolzûl from the mid–late Second Age onward, delving into its stone earlier than surface kin settled the range's foothills in force. In the Fifth Age, the majority departed for Namuzdus in western Silgolt, leaving Tjastad human clans as the range's primary inhabitants.

Distribution
