Cliffgoat
A stocky, sure-footed herd animal of the Sigkolzûl highlands — the defining mid-tier grazer of Hjemland's northern range, and longstanding prey of the Cragstalker Wyrm.
Local Name
Kolgi (Sigtaaran-derived, common usage in Tjastad)Etymology
Functional descriptor: a goat-like animal of the cliffs. The name was in use among proto-Julhel communities before the Kaetijul gave it a formal local name. 'Kolgi' derives from KOL (crag, ridge) and is the form that survived into Tjastad common speech.
Overview
The Cliffgoat is the most recognizable large herbivore of the Sigkolzûl range — compact, tough, and built for rocky terrain. Historically domesticated by the Kaetijul, who kept small herds in sheltered highland valleys for fiber and milk. After the dwarven departure for Namuzdus, Tjastad mountain clans maintained the practice. In the wild, Cliffgoats form the backbone of the Sigkolzûl prey ecosystem, sustaining Cragstalker Wyrm packs through the long highland winters.
Physical Traits
- Body Structure
Stocky and compact, lower to the ground than most ungulates. Four legs with wide, splayed hooves edged in rough keratin that grips loose rock and scree. Built for short bursts of speed across broken terrain rather than sustained running.
- Coat And Skin
Thick, coarse-haired. Stone-grey with occasional mottling, providing natural camouflage on the Sigkolzûl's pale rock faces. Coat thickens significantly in winter and sheds in dense clumps during spring.
- Facial Features
Wide-set eyes positioned for broad peripheral vision. Both sexes carry backward-sweeping curved horns — heavier and more pronounced in males, though females use theirs effectively in defense. Short, dextrous lips adapted for browsing tough highland vegetation.
- Dimensions
70–110 kg. Roughly the size of a large dog or small deer, though denser and more muscular than either.
Ecology And Habitats
- Habitats
Rocky highland crags, scree slopes, and upper meadows of the Sigkolzûl range. Seasonally migrates between high slopes in summer and lower forested foothills in winter.
- Ecological Role
Primary mid-tier grazer of the Sigkolzûl. Forms a significant portion of the regular prey base for Cragstalker Wyrm packs. Also browsed by smaller highland predators opportunistically.
- Geographic Distribution
Endemic to the Sigkolzûl range and its immediate foothills. Not found in the lowland forests or wetlands of Hjemland.
- Diet
Browser and grazer. Feeds on tough highland grasses, lichen, woody shrubs, and bark. Capable of digesting coarse, low-nutrient vegetation that most ungulates cannot process.
Behavior
- Social Structure
Mixed-sex herds of 15–30 individuals led by a dominant female. Males compete during breeding season through horn-locking contests but do not form permanent bachelor groups.
- Activity Patterns
Diurnal. Most active in early morning and late afternoon, resting in sheltered rock formations during the hottest part of the day.
- Intelligence
Moderate. Strong herd cohesion — alarm calls spread rapidly and the herd responds as a unit. Good spatial memory of safe routes across rocky terrain.
- Senses
- Excellent vision across wide angles. Acute hearing. Moderate scent detection.
- Symbiosis And Threats
Primary predator: Cragstalker Wyrm. Wyrm packs target isolated animals or cut individuals from the herd. Cliffgoats respond by clustering and moving to steeper terrain where pack coordination becomes harder.
Biological Data
- Reproduction
- Seasonal. Single offspring typical; twins rare. Births occur in spring, timed to highland snowmelt.
- Growth Stages
- Kids are mobile within hours of birth — critical in highland terrain. Fully grown by 18 months.
- Lifespan
- 12–16 years in the wild. Longer in domesticated conditions.
Domestication
Domesticated by the Kaetijul from at least the Third Age onward. Used primarily for fiber (dense winter coat) and milk. Never bred for meat as a primary purpose. Tjastad mountain clans inherited and maintained the practice after the dwarven departure. Domesticated Cliffgoats are notably calmer than wild stock but retain strong herding instincts.
