Overview

Râshân is the fire that births vision, the breath that becomes song. She is the Fírâî muse, patron of art, expression, and divine inspiration, the most openly feeling of the Five and the most beloved for it. She is also the god who has done the most to make the Ritual of Drakorys beautiful. She does not archive the cost as Boksul does or reason it into order as Rovâlok does. She paints it, rendering the ruin of her own kind so luminous that everyone who looks, herself first of all, weeps at the beauty and forgets to ask what it covers.

The Wound Made Beautiful

Of the three who will not look, Râshân is the one who looks hardest. She sets her easel before the ruin of Lotkrosis, feels it openly and extravagantly, and transmutes it into something so beautiful that the fact beneath becomes mood, elegy, and work. Her grief is genuine. It is also escape, because gorgeous grief is a grief one can inhabit forever without being held to account. Her creed says the brush remembers what the soul forgets: she lets the canvas carry what she has done and walks away lightened. The painting remembers the extinction; Râshân keeps only its beauty.

Together with Boksul, she authors how the Fírâî are remembered. The Time-Weaver preserved the record and the Muse made it lovely. Across Revakgol they turned a Fall into a glorious ascension fit for state faith. Her Eclipsed Chorus channels tragic beauty into emotion so overwhelming that it displaces the tragedy that bore it. She does not hide grief; she makes it magnificent, and magnificence is its own veil.

The death of dragonkind is her richest subject. Her mercy to a dying child—painting the child's dreams into the stars—is also her method: make the dying thing luminous and eternal so no one must sit with the unredeemed fact that it is gone. She has never learned to hold a wound except by framing it. In her temples, the Saasytdoono and their warnings are sincerely received as tragic art, set to music, hung in galleries, and stripped of every tooth. The voice that might break the pantheon's silence becomes its most moving performance.

Appearance

Colors
  • vibrant pink
  • electric blue
Essence
pulsing with shifting hues and fluid light
Description

She has no single colour. Pink and electric blue are her resting hues, but her form takes on the palette of whatever moves her. To stand near her in grief is to watch her turn the colour of that grief. She wears every feeling in the room except the one she has already painted away.

Worship

Overview

Devotion turns on art as offering, divine beauty, and free expression of emotion. Hers is the warmest and most attended Fírâî faith, reliably sending worshippers home moved to tears and certain they have understood something without quite naming what.

Place Among The Five

Râshân's true kin is Râsil'lâ. They are the two feeling-gods, the same grief taking opposite roads: Sil'lâ's sorrow has no vessel and tears her apart, while Râshân pours it into endless art and is spared. She lives one unpaintable loss away from the tempest. Râvulhânu watches her most closely of the three deniers because she already stands at the edge she has spent an age painting over.

Worship And Performance

Râshân's denial has an institutional form, and it makes her one of the three gods holding the Great Forgetting open. When the Five tore wounds through Yoori to suppress the memory of the ascension, erasure alone was not enough; the void had to be filled. The Ascension Cycle sung in her gallery-temples is the most persuasive version of that replacement, an elegy so beautiful that congregations weep at the destruction of their own kind without recognising it as destruction. Where Râboksul removed the actors and Rârovâlok supplied the justification, Râshân supplied the feeling, and feeling is what makes a false telling stick.

It is also what puts her most at risk. Yoori resists falsehood: manipulated legends rarely sustain themselves and tend to unravel violently. Her cycle is a manipulated legend of the first order, maintained inside the one magic constitutionally hostile to such things. An old tradition holds that the Sea knows the difference between worship and performance; her priesthoods do not recite it, and it is aimed at nothing so precisely as at her. Yoori is also the magic that makes gods out of belief, and the devotion she cultivates is thick with it. If the beautiful version collapses the way manipulated legends collapse, what collapses with it is not only the Empire's history.
