Origins

Gogil are one of the two included species of the Gragrahgot / Greenskins, kin to the Ogim and native to Irudy. In Gogil tellings of the Big Green myth, the first Ogim rose from the deep footprints of Käfoozgrag, while the first Gogil opened their eyes in the spaces between steps: where toes scraped stone, where nails tore roots, where shadow slipped beneath thorn and hollow. The Ogim inherited the step; the Gogil inherited the space between steps.

Society

Gogil society is organized around dense, flexible extended units called clutch-holds: combined families, work-cells, nurseries, survival bands, and memory circles. Clutch-holds may include blood relatives, adopted outsiders, rescued captives, apprentices, debt-bound guests, and elders whose duty is to remember danger. A hold is judged by how well it hides, how well it feeds its weakest members, how many exits it maintains, how many warnings it gives before danger arrives, and whether its traps protect kin before harming enemies.

Institutions
Clutch-hold
Core Gogil social unit: extended family, work-cell, nursery, storehouse, and survival band.
First Listener

A practical leader responsible for receiving warnings, rumors, spirit-signs, scout marks, child reports, and dream omens, then deciding what matters before panic spreads.

Signal Elders

Councils of scouts, mothers, trapwrights, shamans, trade-speakers, and proven survivors whose authority rests on practical success rather than title alone.

Ruin-listeners

Wardkeepers and shamans who read cracks, echoes, heat, dreams, old metal, and Tazri residues in thunder-bone ruins.

Warning Paths

Hidden safe routes, marks, bells, scent-signs, and false trails maintained for kin movement through dangerous terrain.

Social Structure

Gogil authority is conditional and practical. A leader who repeatedly sees danger first, remembers routes accurately, or feeds the group through famine gains weight; one whose pride gets people killed is no longer followed. Gogil favor distributed contingency over heroic command. They maintain affectionate, mocking, and necessary ties with Ogim brods: the Ogim are the visible heavy step of the Greenskins, while the Gogil are the hidden listening silence between steps.

Traditions
Warning Meal

Before major journeys, the hold shares deliberately bitter, sour, smoked, or over-salted food. Each participant names one danger the group may face. A child who names a forgotten danger is praised and given the first sweet bite afterward.

Ear-Marking

Ear piercings, cuts, beads, wraps, dyes, and scars mark first scoutings, first traps, saved lives, survived poisonings, ruin-listening apprenticeship, mourning, exile, or treaty with Ogim. Touching another Gogil's ear-marks without permission is a grave insult.

Trapbirth

At a birth, relatives create a harmless snare, bell, falling flower bundle, ash-puff, or rattle outside the birth-space. The first visitor must trigger it and laugh, proving they come as kin rather than threat.

False Door Rite

Adolescents prepare a safe route, a false route, and a warning system. Elders and rivals test the paths. Passing the rite means creating danger that kin can read and survive, not merely fooling everyone.

Thunder-Bone Listening

At ancient ruins, Gogil press ears, teeth, palms, or bone rods against stone to listen for memory, stress, water, spirit-disturbance, or lingering Tazri patterns. Scholars debate whether this is magic, inherited Kori sensitivity, Tazri residue, or superstition; Gogil care whether the tunnel collapses.

Beauty Ideals
Description

Gogil beauty reflects survival-intelligence rather than symmetry alone. Alert eyes, quick hands, expressive ears, quiet steps, useful scars, balanced posture, clever tooth-work, well-kept tools, and skin patterns that blend with local earth, moss, reed, or stone are admired.

Admired Traits
  • large alert eyes and a hard-to-surprise still face
  • long expressive ears with meaningful marks and beads
  • dexterous hands stained or scarred by respected craft
  • clean scars from narrow escapes
  • quiet posture and soft movement
  • a laugh that breaks fear without hiding danger
  • Kori glow-freckles or brief hand-marks among awakened individuals
Elders

Elders are considered beautiful when they are difficult to surprise and can make fear useful rather than contagious.

Gender Roles
Male
  • Dimorphism is subtler than among Ogim; roles emphasize skill, memory, speed, and nerve more than mass.

  • Males may serve as scouts, snare-runners, tunnel cutters, negotiators, wetland fishers, border saboteurs, ward apprentices, or clutch defenders according to aptitude.

Female
  • Dimorphism is subtler than among Ogim; pregnancy mobility, sensory acuity, and tool use remain culturally important.

  • Females may serve as First Listeners, signal elders, trapwrights, herbalists, ruin-listeners, scouts, nursery defenders, or trade-speakers according to aptitude.

Shared
  • Childcare, warning duty, salvage work, route memory, and food security are shared survival obligations across the hold.

Relationship Ideals

Gogil relationships are hold-centered and survival-oriented. Trust is proven by warning, remembering, returning, and maintaining safe paths for others. Cleverness is admired, but private advantage that endangers the hold is despised. Pairings can be flexible when they strengthen the clutch-hold, but lying to kin about danger is treated as deeper betrayal than romantic infidelity.

Taboos
  • Failing to warn the hold of known danger
  • Building a trap with no safe path for kin
  • Poisoning shared water
  • Mocking someone who admits fear before danger
  • Wasting a useful object because it is ugly
  • Speaking loudly in a listening place
  • Sleeping with both ears covered while on watch
  • Drawing a true map for an outsider
  • Leaving a child, elder, or injured scout behind because they slowed the group
  • Turning a warning-snare into a killing device
Xenophobia

Gogil are wary of outsiders because settled peoples make land illegible through roads, fields, walls, property claims, written treaties, and maps that ignore seasonal use. They are especially suspicious of frontier expansion from Hjemland. Yet they can maintain pragmatic trade, intermarriage, and war alliances with Ogim and other neighbors when warning, route, and water customs are respected.

Influence

Gogil are the hidden nervous system of many Greenskin ranges in Irudy. Their scouting, trapcraft, salvage, warding, rumor-work, and route memory allow larger Ogim brods and mixed federations to survive floods, raids, famine, frontier pressure, and dangerous ruins.

Notable Events
  • Greenkin Diaspora (Second Age)
  • Rise and fragmentation of Ogim-Gogil federations in Irudy
  • The Irudy Greenskin Revival
  • The Greenskin-Human Border Clashes
  • The Greenskin Unity Pact
Related Organizations
  • clutch-holds

  • mixed Ogim-Gogil federations
Dress Code

Gogil clothing is close-fitting, layered, and repairable. Flexible wraps, hide vests, reed-cloth, thorn-resistant sleeves, mud-dyed cloaks, and many small tool loops are common. Hard boots are avoided where silence matters. Ear ornaments carry social meaning; tooth caps, small tusk rings, tool-belts, hidden pockets, and scent-pouches are common. Ash Gogil may wear scavenged metals and ward-scratched plates from thunder-bone ruins; Reed Gogil favor waterproofed wraps, cord nets, and mud-camouflage; Thorn Gogil use bramble-dyes and toughened sleeves.

Customs And Rituals

Daily life centers on watches, warning maintenance, tool repair, food preservation, and route teaching. Children learn safe marks before clan histories. Meals often include a danger-naming round in uncertain seasons. Visitors are tested with harmless traps or false approaches before being welcomed. Agreements are remembered through paired marks: one public, one hidden. Death rites vary by region, but most holds preserve a warning associated with the dead, such as a corrected map, a trap lesson, a named unsafe stone, or a story beginning, 'This is where we almost forgot.'

Traits

Appearance

Compact, wiry greenkin humanoids adapted for speed, climbing, squeezing through broken stone, and long periods of alert stillness. Adults commonly stand around 90-140 cm with regional variation. Skin ranges through green, olive, grey-green, moss-dark, yellow-green, and river-mud mottling. Eyes are large and reflective, often amber, red-brown, yellow, or black-green, with excellent low-light vision. Ears are long, mobile, and culturally important. Teeth include sharp lower canines or small protruding tusks, often filed, capped, pierced, or stained. Hands are long-fingered and dexterous; feet are broad-toed and quiet.

Magical Style

Gogil Kori usually manifests as spark, itch, warning, sudden clarity, reflex timing, danger-sense, glowing eyes, or brief hand-marks rather than Ogim-style surges of brute power. Gogil Ykheri is practical and intimate: root-reading, insect signs, fungus lore, thorn-gardening, flood prediction, carrion-cycle knowledge, and hidden-water sense. Some Gogil preserve crude but effective Tazri-derived wardcraft from thunder-bone ruins, often understood through practice before theory.

Lifespan

90 - 130 years on average, with elders valued for route memory, danger memory, craft knowledge, and the ability to distinguish useful fear from panic.

Physiology
Skeleton

Light but resilient frame with flexible joints, compact leverage, strong hands, and climbing-adapted shoulders. Lower mass aids stealth, squeezing, and endurance in broken terrain.

Musculature

Wiry, fast-twitch and endurance-balanced musculature built for bursts, scrambles, crouched movement, and sudden stillness rather than sustained heavy labor.

Respiration

Efficient breathing supports long watches, quiet movement, smoke tolerance, swamp air, and quick recovery after short bursts.

Circulation

Robust circulation and fast clotting support survival after cuts, thorn wounds, insect bites, and trap accidents.

Dermal

Tough, mottled green skin resists abrasion, insects, sun, wetland irritation, and thorn scratches. Some awakened Gogil display brief Kori glow-freckles or luminous hand-marks under stress.

Hair

Sparse to moderate dark hair, often black, brown, moss-dark, or grey; commonly cropped, bound, waxed, or braided away from ears and tools.

Senses
  • Large reflective eyes with excellent low-light and motion sensitivity
  • Long mobile ears capable of fine directional hearing and low tremor detection
  • Strong scent discrimination for water, rot, smoke, predators, herbs, and outsiders
  • Sensitive hands and feet for hollow ground, loose stones, airflow, and unsafe structures
  • Kori-linked danger intuition among awakened individuals
Adaptations
  • High toxin and irritant tolerance, especially plant irritants, spoiled food, smoke, and swamp vapors
  • Exceptional spatial memory for roots, burrows, caches, safe stones, hidden routes, and trap-lines
  • Fast reflexes and precise hand-eye coordination
  • Low-light activity and quiet movement
  • Improvised tool use and salvage aptitude
  • Regional adaptations to thorn scrub, wetlands, ruins, or borderlands
Reproduction
Method

Pairings and family ties are recognized through hold witness, shared warning obligations, and practical contribution to child survival rather than rigid ceremony alone.

Cycle

Fertility tends to align with local food security and wet seasons; some holds delay childbearing during unsafe migrations or border pressure.

Gestation
Approximately 8-9 months; infants are small, alert, and carried close during the first seasons.
Development

Children develop route memory, hand skills, ear-sign literacy, and danger naming early. Clutch-holds raise children communally, with strong emphasis on safe paths and listening discipline.

Courtship

Courtship often involves practical proofs: repairing a tool, remembering a route, disarming a harmless snare, sharing food in famine, or admitting fear before danger.

Interbreeding

Intermarriage with Ogim is culturally attested through Greenskin alliances and mixed federations; hybrid families often serve as scouts, interpreters, or diplomatic bridges. Other viable pairings require separate confirmation.

Cultural Influence

Children belong to the clutch-hold as much as to parents. A child who notices danger adults missed is publicly praised, reinforcing warning as moral duty.

Growth
Infancy

First years focus on carrying, scent recognition, sleep discipline, and early response to ear-signs, bells, and hush-clicks.

Childhood

Children learn safe marks, forbidden paths, tool names, food sorting, harmless snares, and danger stories before adult clan histories.

Adolescence

Adolescents undergo the False Door Rite or equivalent local tests, proving they can create a safe route, false route, and warning system readable by kin.

Adulthood

Adults specialize by aptitude as scouts, trapwrights, herbalists, fishers, salvage-workers, wardkeepers, trade-speakers, nursery defenders, signal elders, or border fighters.

Growth Rate

Rapid early sensory and coordination development, with social adulthood tied less to age than to reliable warning, route memory, and safe tool use.

Sexual Dimorphism

Subtle compared with Ogim. Build, ear shape, height, and tusk prominence vary, but Gogil culture places more importance on aptitude, sensory acuity, craft, nerve, and memory than gendered mass.

Intelligence

Type

Practical, spatial, improvisational, and danger-oriented intelligence rooted in memory, pattern recognition, tool use, and communal warning.

Strengths
  • Exceptional spatial memory and route recall
  • Trapcraft, sabotage, salvage, and improvisational engineering
  • Early detection of danger through sound, scent, movement, and social cues
  • Ruin-reading and practical ward experimentation
  • Rumor analysis, coded signaling, and indirect negotiation
  • Adapting social structure quickly under pressure
Learning Style

Hands-on apprenticeship, copied marks, route-walking, trap games, danger stories, warning meals, elder correction, and controlled exposure to false paths. Children are encouraged to interrupt adults with relevant warnings.

Comparison To Human

Generally smaller and weaker than humans in brute force, but often superior in low-light perception, reflexive danger response, spatial memory, stealth movement, trapcraft, salvage, and survival in broken terrain. Comparable or greater in practical communal intelligence under scarcity.

Controversies

  • Outsiders often misread Gogil caution and indirect warfare as cowardice or treachery.
  • Some Gogil holds become paranoid, manipulative, or cruel when survival at any cost overwhelms warning ethics.

  • Ruin-listeners and Ash Gogil may preserve dangerous Tazri-derived practices they do not fully understand.

  • Ogim allies sometimes treat Gogil contingency planning as disloyalty, while Gogil mock Ogim charges as pride without exits.

  • Borderland Gogil sabotage against Hjemland frontiers blurs defense, raiding, and terror tactics.

Lore

Origin Myth

When Käfoozgrag, the Big Green, strode across the wet world, the first Ogim rose from the deep footprints where strength pressed into clay. But where his toes scraped stone, where his nails tore roots, and where his shadow slipped beneath thorn and hollow, the first Gogil opened their eyes. The Ogim inherited the step. The Gogil inherited the space between steps. Big Green told the Ogim: 'Walk until the grass remembers your step.' To the Gogil he whispered: 'Listen where the grass refuses to grow.'

Founders
  • Käfoozgrag, fin Grag Et (Big Green, the Green One) – primal Greenskin ancestor
Core Legends
  • The Space Between Steps: Gogil origin myth linking them to Käfoozgrag while distinguishing their sacred role from Ogim strength.

  • The First False Door: A tale of the first child who saved a hold by making enemies choose the obvious path and kin choose the marked one.

  • The Stone That Bit Twice: A ruin-listener legend warning that thunder-bone sites remember harm and repeat old violence if approached loudly.

  • The Bitter Feast: A famine story explaining the Warning Meal and the duty to name danger before sweetness is shared.

  • The Fence That Forgot It Was Temporary: Borderland tale mocking human claims to fixed ownership over seasonal paths, water, and forage.

Taboos
  • Failing to warn kin of known danger
  • Building kin-blind traps
  • Poisoning shared water
  • Speaking loudly in listening places
  • Drawing true maps for outsiders
  • Turning warning tools into murder tools
