Role
Protagonist and POV anchor for effectively the whole book. Fourth child of Voryk and Sylra; younger brother to Torvaal and Zyra; half-brother to Lirsa. Born 23 Daazil 1230 AZN in eastern Silgolt. Aged 9 at the opening, 35 at the close. Over seventeen chapters he moves from the least-regarded son of a clan-chief to Vaazaa'Dovaajun, Supreme Dragonlord, and founder of the Empire of Revakgol — at which point he discards the name Zelguu and takes Kaemisyol, the Dark Flame. Canon: dies 1426 AZN aged 196, in the Imperial City, of old age, sleepless and paranoid.
Appearance
Grey scales — textured, battle-worn, and conspicuously wrong among a people who run crimson; his own family are dusky crimson, deep crimson, rose-red and pale rose. This is his single most identifying feature and he should be looked at for it in every clan he enters. Red eyes, piercing. Angular draconic features. Grows to 2.6m and 140kg, well beyond the 2.3m species norm. Muscular frame. On the left forearm, the flame-sigil he burned into himself at Voryk's pyre — smooth, glossy, deliberate, and the physical anchor of the Ghostback link. A second mark on the same arm: a single white-black stripe he calls a childhood accident, which no one has dared duplicate. In the Kriistahv chapters his scales go dull from months without sunlight and his eyes darken. His Kori shows as white-and-black fire.
Speech Patterns
Commanding, mid-deep, formal register even as a boy — he speaks like someone rehearsing for a role he has not been given yet. Short declaratives. He lets cold clip the ends of words. Calculated pauses that read as thought rather than hesitation; extended silences that unnerve people. He answers questions with questions when he is buying time ("What stops you from attacking first?"). Compliments are strategic and rationed. Insults go straight at weakness. Swearing invokes the dragons. Metaphor comes from fire and conquest — he thinks in crucibles. Under strain the ornament drops away entirely and he speaks in bare verbs: "Form the circle." "Go." "I accept." Signature line: "Greatness is not inherited — it is seized. And those who falter deserve their fall."
Personality
The Patient Flame is a character description before it is a magic system. He does not rage; he assesses. Even in his first real fight his Kori arrives as "the calculated heat of assessment" rather than fury — measuring distance, angle, the soft base of an immature horn. Strategic to the point of coldness, self-taught, restless, a natural rhetorician who understands early that a story about a battle outlasts the battle. His engine is unification, and beneath the unification is the boy who was refused a place in the raid. He believes strength justifies sovereignty, that order is survival, and that fire refines — that only through trial does anyone worth following emerge. Compassion appears, but as an instrument: he spares the Zegtuzsos scout and is honest with himself that in another life he would have killed it without thinking. Flaws are the same traits at higher temperature. A volcanic temper under the control. Pathological secrecy — he will not delegate and will not share what he knows, which makes him efficient and isolated in equal measure. Pride that reads disagreement as disloyalty. After Kriistahv, paranoia becomes structural: cipher lists of names, burned each morning, a network of watchers, and a permanent assumption of betrayal. Track the cooling. He is a grieving boy in Ch3, a devoted partner in Ch5–9, a strategist in Ch10–11, and after Ch12 something that has decided never to be surprised again. By the ending he is not a hero and not a tyrant — he is an architect, and the architect pays in stone, ash and memory.
Notes
KORI — Ko'Wokazil at nine (Ch3). First conscious control at fourteen (Ch5). Ko'Larkzil by his twenties (Ch8). Canon has him reach Ko'Yolhak, Flameweaving, in adulthood, his aura alone stirring the Kori of legions; Ko'Vooklazil is rumoured and never confirmed — keep it hearsay. RELATIONSHIPS — Vati Vhaltaak, shield-sibling then partner, flame-harmony, mother of his three children (only Zaehra is named on the page). Femaendinir, the Ghostback, bonded through the pyre scar; the link runs both ways and dissolves under fever. Sylra, mother and teacher, whose death cools him permanently. Zyra, protective older sister, the only one who teases him. Lirsa, half-sister and prophet, whom he handles with a rough affection he shows no one else. Raanuk, acting Dovjun, adversary. Karthuun Veyl, canon calls him a childhood ally — the manuscript does not, yet. TRAUMA LEDGER — survivor's guilt from childhood; nightmares of the dead (he later describes sleep as a shallow tide where the drowned rise to speak); paranoia after Kriistahv; emotional withdrawal; long silences staring at the sea in old age. LANGUAGES — Sigtaara, Aedtaara. BEYOND THE BOOK (canon, for foreshadowing only) — wins the Great Wyrm War; founds Vusokaar in 1269; establishes the Citadel Archives; reforms Saarotsos martial training; drains the treasury; alienates his court; dies ruling by dread rather than love. Rumours of moral corruption, including the abuse of his court's youth, trail him to the grave and are never proven. Canon holds these as slander-or-shadow, unresolved; the book should decide how much of that shadow is already visible at thirty-five, and it needs handling with care. Canon: history.characters.zelguu_kairtis (record filed under the birth name; the entity itself is titled Kaemisyol, native KÄMISYOL).
