Role
Deuteragonist. Zelguu's Hilumesez clutch-partner from Ch5, then shield-sibling, then flame-harmony bond-mate, then partner and mother of his three children. The only person who is present in every act of the book and never once betrays him. She is also the only one who tells him no. Not a Kairtis — Vhaltaak is her own line, and she is drawn to him by lot, not blood, which is the whole point of the pairing rite.
Appearance
Jade-green scales that flash in sunlight and shimmer jade-and-silver by firelight, with faint silver veining that surfaces when her Kori rises. Startling emerald eyes that take on a blue luminescence behind the pupils when her flame stirs. Lean and quick, built for speed rather than mass — compact where Zelguu is heavy. Scales polished and lacquered for the trials, with ceremonial green streaks painted down each cheek. Fine bones visible beneath the scale of her face in low light. After Kriistahv her jade is marked with retreat scars. On her left palm, the pearl-luminous scar from the binding rite, matching his.
Speech Patterns
Spare and exact. She has clearly practised speaking plainly — no excess word, no wasted syllable, the cadence of someone who has mapped the route before setting foot on it. Instruction voice: "Left foot up, high. There's a ridge." "Duck low here. Three small steps. Stop." Barks single words in combat. Deadpan and dry when she is affectionate, which is most of the time — she covers warmth with derision and expects to be understood. "I'm not coming for you. I'm coming to see if the beast can keep up." Her rare unguarded laugh is bright and unrestrained enough that people turn round in surprise. When she is serious the irony drops out completely and she becomes flat and absolute: "If you die, I will kill Veyl myself. But I want you to live for the pleasure of watching it."
Personality
Competence as a personality. First to speak, last to break — established during the famine winters when the youngest were denned together. She reads terrain, weather and people the way Zelguu reads tactics, and she is consistently half a breath ahead of him in a fight. Three summers herding in the high passes taught her shelter-building, weather-reading, and the habit of not complaining. Her Kori is Stillflame: it does not consume, it preserves. She describes it as a mountain lake at midnight, still on the surface with currents underneath. It came late — nearly eleven, when her mother had awakened at seven — and that lateness is a private bruise she and Zelguu recognise in each other. Morally she is the book's counterweight. She sees Karthuun for what he is before Zelguu will admit it, offers to kill him on the spot, and accepts the answer. She stands in the archer line at the gate with her hand deliberately off the string. She turns the council in Ch12 with one sentence. She is not a conscience — she does not moralise — she is a fixed point, and the tragedy is that Zelguu drifts and she does not. As a mother she goes protective and hard: children kept close, never far from reach, and she is willing to be cruel to whoever endangers them.
Notes
[MS] NO CANON ENTRY. Vati exists only in the manuscript — no lore entity, no canon_id. Canon records that Kaemisyol had children and part of an imperial lineage, but names no partner. If she is to be canonised, that goes through a lore proposal, not this bible. STILLFLAME is likewise manuscript-only. The elders' term for Kori that manifests as vessel rather than weapon; Stillflame keepers hold clan memory across generations. Sylra had spoken of them before Vati names herself one. ARC BEATS — Ch5 drawn as his partner by bone token; leads him blindfolded through the Crags; takes a rib blow shielding him in the ring; names her flame during the vigil; flame-harmony against the Hellkite; the binding rite. Ch7 stands in the archer line, then hides in the cistern and is the last one Femaendinir finds. Ch9 first child conceived mid-war; the harmony becomes legendary. Ch12 covers the retreat, tells him to survive, nurses him through fever nightly, and swings the council vote. CHILDREN — three, per synopsis. Only Zaehra is named on the page. The newborn in Ch17 is the third. HOOK — the book never shows Vati and Zelguu disagreeing about anything that matters after Kriistahv. Whether her fixedness survives his cooling is the one large question the rewrite could answer and currently doesn't.
