A blind, acid-spitting subterranean wyrm of Silgolt's deep mountain cave systems, encountered most often by miners.

Scientific Name

Zemodov Golvakrul

Classification

Terrestrial Wyrm (subterranean)

Origin

Silgolt (Eastern Mountain Cave Systems)

Description

Short

A blind, acid-spitting subterranean wyrm of Silgolt's deep mountain cave systems, encountered most often by miners.

Full

The Pitcrawler is a flightless, entirely subterranean Terrestrial Wyrm endemic to the deep cave systems beneath Silgolt's eastern mountain ranges. Its wings have reduced over generations to flat dorsal membranes — vestigial structures that now serve primarily as heat-retaining panels in the cold cave environment. Its eyes are completely absent; the sockets are sealed over with thickened scale. Navigation and hunting rely entirely on a highly developed vibration sense distributed across the limbs, underside, and jaw. The Pitcrawler produces a corrosive acid spray, stored in a specialized gland behind the jaw, used both for prey capture and for marking territory on cave walls — dissolving rock to leave chemical signatures other Pitcrawlers can detect. The creature's existence was confirmed when Silgoltian mining operations broke through into nesting tunnels. Initial encounters were lethal on both sides. It is now treated as an occupational hazard in deep-mining regions; experienced crews carry specific countermeasures. Some Silgoltian cultures interpret a Pitcrawler incursion as an omen — the exact meaning varies by community, but most traditions agree it signals that something has been disturbed that should have remained undisturbed.

Anatomy

Body Structure

Elongated, low-slung quadruped with six multi-jointed limbs optimized for vertical rock climbing and tight tunnel navigation. Vestigial dorsal membranes fold flat against the back. No tail fin; tail is short and tapered.

Scale Characteristics

Dull, pale grey-white scales with a matte finish — no pigmentation. The ventral surface is slightly translucent, revealing the acid gland as a faint greenish mass behind the jaw when lit directly.

Facial Features

Completely eyeless — scale-covered sockets. Wide, flat jaw with dense, backward-curved teeth for grip. Prominent vibration-sensing pits along the jaw, cheeks, and underside of the neck. Acid gland exits through two small ducts between the front teeth.

Biological Data

Reproduction
Type
Oviparous
Gestation
5 months
Parental Care

Eggs are sealed into acid-etched wall niches and guarded by the female until hatching. Hatchlings disperse quickly.

Growth Stages
Hatchling
0-6 months, remains near nest; acid gland not yet functional
Juvenile
6 months - 3 years, developing vibration senses and acid production
Mature
5+ years, fully territorial; acid output reaches full corrosive strength
Lifespan
60–80 years

Ecology

Habitat
Deep cave systems, lava tubes, and mine-accessible tunnels in Silgolt's eastern mountain ranges
Role

Apex subterranean predator — controls populations of cave-dwelling fauna; incidentally shapes cave geology through acid marking

Diet

Type
Carnivorous
Primary Prey

Cave beetles, blind fish from underground streams, cave-adapted mammals, and whatever enters its territory

Hunting Behavior

Completely still ambush — waits until vibration sense confirms prey location, then immobilizes with acid spray before closing in

Seasonal Behavior

Activity
No seasonal variation; cave environment is stable year-round
Breeding
Breeding appears to correlate with prey population peaks rather than season

Intelligence

Comparable To
Large solitary reptiles — territorial, patient, and responsive to learned environmental patterns
Skills
  • Precise acid targeting in complete darkness
  • Long-term territorial mapping via chemical signatures
  • Recognition of recurring vibration patterns — including mining activity

Senses

Sight
None — eyes absent
Vibration Detection

Primary sense; distributed across all six limbs, the jaw, and the ventral surface. Can resolve the size, gait, and direction of movement of any creature within approximately 40 meters in open cave space.

Chemical

Detects acid-marker signatures from other Pitcrawlers; uses these to map territory and breeding status

Hearing
Rudimentary; responds to loud sound as a secondary vibration cue

Symbiosis

Symbiotic Species
  • Certain cave fungi colonize Pitcrawler acid-etched wall marks, creating microhabitats for cave insect populations that the Pitcrawler then feeds on

Parasites
  • Cave mites in scale joints — significant irritant in older individuals

Domestication

Domesticated By
—
Status
Undomesticated; considered extremely dangerous in enclosed spaces
