A massive, fully aquatic serpentine wyrm of Hjemland's deep fjords and ice lakes, feared and revered by coastal communities.

Scientific Name

Zemodov Djirvakrul

Classification

Aquatic Wyrm

Origin

Hjemland

Description

Short

A massive, fully aquatic serpentine wyrm of Hjemland's deep fjords and ice lakes, feared and revered by coastal communities.

Full

The Fjordback is a permanent aquatic wyrm native to the cold, deep fjords and ice lakes of Hjemland. Unlike all other known wyrms, it is fully committed to an aquatic lifestyle: its forelimbs are vestigial — small, paddle-like appendages used for steering at low speed — and it has no wings. Propulsion comes from powerful lateral undulation of its long, muscular body. The Fjordback is an apex predator in its waterways, hunting seals, large fish, and anything that falls or wanders within striking range of the surface. Its keeled dorsal ridge is often the only visible sign of its presence — a slow, dark line cutting through still fjord water — hence the common name. Hjemland fishing and coastal communities treat the Fjordback with a mixture of genuine dread and structured reverence. Some communities leave offerings at fjord edges before fishing season. Others regard seeing its keel as an omen, the interpretation depending on local tradition.

Anatomy

Body Structure

Long, serpentine body with minimal limb development. Vestigial forelimbs function as pectoral paddles; no hind limbs. No wings. Keeled dorsal ridge runs the full length of the back, assisting stability and surface propulsion.

Scale Characteristics

Dark grey-blue on the dorsal surface, fading to pale grey-white on the ventral side. Scales are dense and tightly overlapping — resistant to cold and pressure. The dorsal keel scales are raised and slightly serrated.

Facial Features

Long, narrow skull with a wide jaw capable of engulfing large prey whole. Eyes are positioned high on the head for surface scanning while most of the body remains submerged. No external ear structures; vibration sensing via lateral line organs along the flanks.

Biological Data

Reproduction
Type
Oviparous
Gestation
Unknown; eggs have never been observed. Presumed laid in deep lake or fjord-bottom nests.
Parental Care
Unknown
Growth Stages
Juvenile

Juveniles are occasionally seen in shallower lake inlets — much smaller and more cautious than adults

Mature
20+ years estimated; full adults rarely leave the deep water
Lifespan
300+ years (estimated; oldest recorded sightings span multiple generations of the same community)

Ecology

Habitat
Deep fjords, glacial lakes, and cold tidal inlets of Hjemland
Role
Apex aquatic predator — regulates seal, large fish, and large aquatic fauna populations

Diet

Type
Carnivorous
Primary Prey
Seals, large fish, waterfowl, and occasional large land mammals at the waterline
Hunting Behavior

Slow surface approach with most of the body submerged; rapid lunge when within range. Also hunts mid-water by ambush from depth.

Seasonal Behavior

Activity
Year-round; range expands slightly in summer when prey moves into shallower inlets
Breeding
Unknown; suspected to occur in deepest fjord sections during winter

Intelligence

Comparable To
Large cetaceans — patient, deliberate, and capable of learning the patterns of human activity
Skills
  • Long-term territorial memory of fjord geography
  • Recognition of recurring boat patterns and fishing schedules
  • Strategic patience — will stalk prey for extended periods before striking

Senses

Sight
Good surface and shallow-water vision; reduced in deep murk
Hearing
Lateral line organs detect pressure waves and vibration with high sensitivity
Smell
Acute; tracks prey across long distances through water

Symbiosis

Symbiotic Species
  • Certain diving birds follow Fjordbacks and feed on fish disturbed by their movement
Parasites
  • Large freshwater lampreys occasionally attach to the ventral surface

Domestication

Status
Undomesticated; considered untameable
