Description
- Short
- Amorphous shapeshifters born of swamp and sorrow, luring prey with eerie mimicry.
- Full
Mireforms are semi-liquid shapeshifters that haunt the damp reaches of Siniath and the western wetlands of Silgolt. Composed of viscous, mud-slick flesh and fibrous sinew, they are neither solid nor gas, but a pulsing middle state. They excel in aggressive mimicry, often luring travelers by taking on the forms of wounded companions, lost children, or divine visions. Though alien in form, their cunning and patience make them deadly hunters of the bog.
Anatomy
- Structure
- Amorphous cellular mass with stabilizing neural web
- Mobility
- Flows in low form; coalesces into humanoid or beast shapes
- Skin
- Dark and glossy with bioluminescent nodes
- Senses
- Distributed tactile, visual, and auditory input across surface membrane
- Regeneration
- Steady in humid environments; sluggish in dry or cold climates
Shapeshifting
- Limits
- Cannot form rigid structures; mimics features using mud-hardened surface
- Targets
- Recently observed or absorbed humanoids and animals
- Voice Imitation
- Wet, slurred, eerily accurate; often distorted mid-sentence
- Behavioral Mimicry
- Limited but effective; repeats gestures or phrases in unnatural rhythm
Behavior
- Cognition
- Collective learning via memory osmosis; limited individuality
- Communication
- Mournful howls, gurgles, echo-voices of past victims
- Feeding
- Absorbs organic matter through surface contact
- Strategy
- Long-game deception; builds trust or pity before ambush
Reproduction
- Method
- Splitting — segments break off when overfed or damaged
- Growth Rate
- Slow; seeds may lie dormant for years
- Stages
- Spore Phase — inert hardened mass in swamp
- Awakening — subtle surface shifting
- Learner Stage — mimics simple creatures
- Hunter — mimics humanoids, forms traps
Weaknesses
- Fire
- Salt
- Desiccation (dry winds or sunlight)
- Cannot mimic fine features like jewelry or tattoos
- Restricted to humid or swampy climates
Cultural Significance
- Feared in Siniath as 'The Weeping Flesh', thought to be drowned traitors' remains
- Some druids in Silgolt revere them as living extensions of the bog
- Murals in drowned ruins hint at older forms during the Third Age
Variants
- Siniath
- Local Name
- The Weeping Flesh
- Habitat
- Haunted marshes, drowned ruins, and spirit-scoured fens
- Traits
- Spirit Echoes
- Can display emotional fragments and memories of absorbed beings
- Mimicry Quality
- Emotionally haunting; facial features often melt or collapse mid-shift
- Personality
- Displays ritualistic or melancholic patterns, such as prayer or mourning
- Memory Clusters
- Territorial memory pools with layered identities
- Cultural Notes
- Believed to be cursed souls by Kaemisaedhel
- Thought to 'speak the truth' their drowned victims never could
- Western Silgolt
- Local Name

- Habitat
- Flooded glades and peat bogs west of Lokraasos territory
- Traits
- Mimicry Quality
- Crude exaggeration—oversized eyes, limbs, or faces
- Material Integration
- Incorporates moss, bones, bark, and debris into its form
- Behavior
- Sometimes operates in coordinated packs; ambush tactics
- Mimic Fauna
- May imitate boars, wolves, or local beasts
- Cultural Notes
- Feared by frontier clans as 'the Shifting Folk in the fen'
- Hunted by Saarotsos warbands for ambushing travelers
