Habitat

  • Battlefields
  • Haunted ruins
  • Cursed tombs
  • Trauma-saturated locations

Description

Short
Involuntary shapeshifters born of death echoes and emotional residue.
Full

Echoed Skin are shapeshifters that do not choose their forms. Instead, they reactively manifest appearances tied to emotional residue, death, or trauma in their environment. Their bodies flicker between faces and forms — ancestors, victims, strangers — often mimicking individuals they’ve never met but whose psychic imprints linger. They are haunted, fragmented beings, caught between identity and oblivion, memory and mimicry. While not aggressive by nature, their presence causes unease, hallucination, and identity confusion in others.

Anatomy

Form
Constantly shifting humanoid silhouette; features change in race, age, and expression
Skin
Veil-like membrane rippling with emotional or magical pressure
Eyes
Shifting color or mismatched; sometimes mirror observer’s gaze
Voice
Layered echoes from other lives, often fragmented or nonsensical

Shapeshifting

Control
None; transformations are involuntary and based on surroundings
Triggers
Emotional intensity, proximity to death, lingering magical trauma
Memory Absorption
May involuntarily adopt habits, phrases, or memories
Anchoring
Can briefly stabilize if isolated or focused on in ritual silence

Behavior

Cognition
Fragmented; retains foreign memories, often confused or dissociated
Communication
Speaks in broken phrases; often recalls dreams or confessions
Temperament
Melancholic, timid, avoidant
Existential Drift
Prone to losing track of its current self; fears mirrors or being named

Reproduction

Origin
Spontaneously formed in areas of intense psychic trauma or death
Growth
Becomes more stable in emotionally calm environments
Lifespan
Highly variable — from days to centuries depending on conditions

Weaknesses

  • No control over form
  • Vulnerable to magical anchors or reflective surfaces
  • Affected by memory spells — can forget form or shatter under psychic weight
  • Naming its current form aloud may disrupt or unravel it

Cultural Significance

  • Kaelotaedhel view them as memory-shards striving for rebirth
  • Kaemisaedhel cults try to bind them for secrets and confessions
  • Folktales claim they may wear the face of the living, causing shared collapse
  • Feared in war zones as omens of unfinished grief
