# Kurnumgrath, Dôlmuzûn, Varkgrum — the three founding holdfasts

> Versioned candidate package for human review. This is not canon.

## Package overview

Status: **accepted** · Kind: **overview** · Version: **1**

"markdown": "# Ask\n\nThe canon event **The Gathering at Three Spires** names three Kaetijul holdfasts by name — Kurnumgrath, Dôlmuzûn, and Varkgrum — and makes their union the founding act of the Namuzdus state. None of the three has a settlement entity. They are, right now, three proper nouns in a single sentence carrying the weight of a nation's origin.\n\nThis package gives them bodies. It also resolves the second open question I raised in the Namuzdus Dominion package.\n\n## The thesis\n\nThree holdfasts that founded a council-republic should not be interchangeable, or the founding was not a negotiation. So each is written to explain one part of why Namuzdus governs the way it does:\n\n- **Kurnumgrath** is the *oldest* — first cut, deepest, poorest in ore now, richest in claim. It supplies the Council's legitimacy and its conservatism, and it is the seat of the isolationist faction that the Echoed Crown Prophecy has been feeding.\n- **Dôlmuzûn** is the *richest* — the Deepmetal holdfast, the one with the veins, the one that actually pays for the state. It supplies the internationalist line that won the Stonecrown Schism, and it is where the Echoforge Compact with Izheim is administered.\n- **Varkgrum** is the *gate* — the outward-facing holdfast at the passes, mixed, commercial, and the only one where outsiders live in numbers. It supplies the Council's diplomats and is distrusted by both the others.\n\nThat gives the Stonecrown Council a real internal geography: the Schism was not an abstract policy dispute but Kurnumgrath against Dôlmuzûn with Varkgrum deciding, and the current isolationist revival is the same fault line reopening.\n\n## Items\n\n1. **`settlement` entity — Kurnumgrath**, the first cut.\n2. **`settlement` entity — Dôlmuzûn**, the vein-hold.\n3. **`settlement` entity — Varkgrum**, the gate.\n\n## Open questions for the human reviewer\n\n- The three-way political division is the substantive invention here. It is inferred from canon (an elected council, a schism over export policy, a prophecy-driven isolationist turn all imply factions with homes) but canon does not assign factions to holdfasts. If you'd rather the Council's factions cut across the holdfasts rather than map onto them, all three entities need adjusting together.\n- I have **not** placed a capital among them. The Namuzdus Dominion package says the Council sits at the Triple Spire; these entities keep that, with the Spire as a shared site belonging to none of the three. A future package could give the Triple Spire its own location entity.\n- Populations are given as relative rather than numeric, since canon's other settlement entities vary in whether they commit to figures."

"summary": "The oldest of the three founding holdfasts of Namuzdus and the poorest of them, worked out of ore generations ago and living now on precedence, memory, and the moral authority of having been first. Kurnumgrath supplies the Stonecrown Council with its legitimacy and its conservatism in roughly equal measure, and it is the home of the isolationist faction that lost the Stonecrown Schism and has been quietly winning the argument back ever since the Echoed Crown Prophecy.",

What remains is a holdfast that is magnificent, half-empty, and acutely conscious of both facts. Its lower works are maintained as much for their own sake as for use, which the other holdfasts consider either reverence or vanity depending on the decade.",
"significance": "Kurnumgrath holds the ceremonial precedence in Council business — its speaker opens each session — and the custody of the founding record of the Triple Spire pact. Neither is a formal veto. Both are used as one.",
"economy": "Exhausted veins, worked-out galleries, and an economy that has shifted to stone-cutting, restoration work, the training of runesmiths, and the accommodation of pilgrims and archivists. Kurnumgrath is subsidised by the Council in all but name, a dependency it resents and its rivals mention.",
"politics": "The seat of the isolationist faction. The argument runs that Namuzdus sold its independence for Izheim's custom, that the Deepmetal will not last, and that a people who once needed no one now cannot feed themselves without a road. The Echoed Crown Prophecy — the mountain awakens when blood meets stone — is read here more literally than anywhere else, and Kurnumgrath's seers are the ones who first pronounced on it.",
"culture": "Formal, archival, and slow. Kurnumgrath keeps the oldest craft-rites and the strictest apprenticeships, and produces a disproportionate share of the Council's geomantic seers. Its people have a reputation across Namuzdus for being insufferable about seniority and, when it matters, for being right about it.",

"significance": "The source of the Deepmetal on which the Dominion's economy, its alliance with Izheim, and both of its wars with Revakgol have turned. What Dôlmuzûn decides to dig, the Council eventually ratifies.",
"economy": "Deepmetal extraction above all, with the associated crafts: assaying, resonance-testing, the grading of stock, and the preparation of raw alloy for carriage. The holdfast maintains the export register and the standing contracts with Izheim, and the traffic that leaves through Varkgrum and down the Tuzraag relays is scheduled here.",
"politics": "The seat of the trade faction and the architect of the Stonecrown Schism's resolution in favour of the gnome alliance. Its standing argument is unsentimental: the mountain has never fed itself, it did not feed itself before the Accord either, and independence that depends on nobody wanting what you have is not independence but obscurity. Dôlmuzûn regards the isolationist revival as a luxury belief held by a holdfast that no longer has to make payroll.",
"culture": "Practical, acquisitive, and comparatively open — Dôlmuzûn takes apprentices from outside Namuzdus, which Kurnumgrath considers close to sacrilege. Status attaches to output and to the quality of a vein-read. The holdfast's craft-work is excellent and unromantic.",
"relation_to_namuzdus": "One of the three founding holdfasts of the Triple Spire pact, Fifth Age 721 (MV 10327). Holds the largest single bloc of Council seats by master-crafter count."

It is where Deepmetal is weighed, sealed, and handed to the carriers, and where anyone entering Namuzdus with business is stopped, housed, and assessed.",

"economy": "Customs, carriage, warehousing, and provisioning; the assay-seal that certifies Deepmetal for export; smithing and finishing work aimed at outside buyers rather than at the mountain; and the accommodation trade, which is substantial and which the other holdfasts affect to find distasteful.",
"politics": "Formally uncommitted and practically decisive. Varkgrum's Council delegation has swung between the Kurnumgrath and Dôlmuzûn positions more than once and holds the balance in most contested votes — a position it has cultivated deliberately. Its own interest is simple and rarely disguised: the gate is worthless if nothing moves through it, which puts Varkgrum against full isolation while leaving it happy to see the isolationists strong enough to keep Dôlmuzûn's terms honest.",
"culture": "The most cosmopolitan place in Namuzdus and the least typical. Multilingual, commercially minded, and comfortable with outsiders in a way that reads to Kurnumgrath as dilution. There is a substantial resident foreign population — Tuzraagi carters, Súzyngoli factors, Izheim agents, and a long-settled Kaekreaedhel community that arrived during the diaspora and stayed.",

**Provenance:** Follow-up to the Namuzdus Dominion package, resolving a second open question raised there. All three names are canon: history.events.the_gathering_at_three_spires (canon_json) states that "Three major Kaetijul holdfasts — Kurnumgrath, Dôlmuzûn, and Varkgrum — unify under a shared mountain pact at the Triple Spire of Namuzdus," founding the Kingdom of Namuzdus under the elected Stonecrown Council in Fifth Age 721 (MV 10327). Further grounding: history.events.the_naming_of_namuzdus, the_deepmetal_accord, the_stonecrown_schism, the_echoed_crown_prophecy, the_echoforge_compact (canon_json); species.firgol.sentient.julhel.kaetijul; settlement shape referenced against settlements.aeltheryn and settlements.vusokaar (canon_json).
