Ask

Ohynso is named as a neighbour by both Nasun and the Hihn Confluence in canon and has no entity. The spatial data gives it the detail that defines it: Ohynso borders the Empire of Revakgol. It is the western cluster's frontier with the largest military power in the known world.

The thesis

Every other country in the cluster survives by being useful, neutral, or not worth taking. Ohynso cannot use any of those — it faces an empire that has already invaded Namuzdus twice for a resource Ohynso does not even have. So its institution is the Standing Withdrawal: a continuously maintained, publicly known plan for its own abandonment. Every village has a designated fallback, a named receiving village inland, a cached stock, and a rehearsed season for the move. The duchy drills it.

The consequence is a culture that has organised four centuries of civic life around the assumption of eventual loss, and a strategic posture that is genuinely difficult for Revakgol to attack profitably — you cannot capture a population that has already agreed where it is going, and the granaries burn on a schedule.

This is the deliberate counterweight to the Tovo package (filed separately), where the neighbouring frontier duchy chose accommodation instead. The two are written as a matched pair and read best together.

Items

  1. country entity — The Duchy of Ohynso. The Standing Withdrawal, the Warden's ledger, the deliberately impermanent built environment, and a frontier society that treats its own territory as expendable and its people as not.

Open questions for the human reviewer

  • Naming — resolved, and it turned up something else. An earlier version of this package flagged Kaetijul vs Kaetijulhel as a canon inconsistency. It is not one: -jul is simply the short form of -julhel, so both are correct and the country files just use the long form. This package uses the long form to match its siblings. The real gap the investigation surfaced is that Yukejulhel has no species entity at all — unlike Medesjul, Kaetijul, Jaajul, and Aedhelirjul, it is a Julhel branch named across four canon country files with nothing behind it. That deserves its own package.
  • I have not written a specific Revakgol invasion of Ohynso into canon — the duchy's history is written as pressure, raids, and one near-miss, leaving room for you to place a real war here if the timeline wants one. If a Revakgol–Ohynso war should exist, this entity should be revised rather than the event invented around it.
  • The inland receiving villages imply a formal arrangement with Aalhotikyn and Nasun that I've gestured at but not specified. If the Withdrawal has treaty status in the cluster, that's a Nasun-archived document worth its own item.

The Duchy of Ohynso

countries_and_continents.continents.silgolt.nations.ohynso.duchy_of_ohynso country nation

The western cluster's frontier with the Empire of Revakgol, and the only country in it that has formally accepted it cannot hold its own ground. Ohynso maintains a continuously updated plan for its own abandonment: every village has a named fallback, a receiving village inland, a cached stock and a rehearsed season, and the duchy drills the move. Its neighbours find this morbid. Revakgol's border commanders find it expensive, which is the point.

Also known as Ohynso, the March, the Withdrawing Duchy

Content

Description

Ohynso is the eastern edge of the western cluster, where cultivated country gives way to the march before Revakgol. It is decent land and always has been, which is the duchy's whole problem. Four centuries of imperial pressure taught Ohynso that a small polity on that border has two options: become a client, as Tovo did, or become not worth the campaign. Ohynso chose the second, and has organised everything since around making the choice credible.

The Standing Withdrawal

The duchy's central institution and its constitution in all but name. Every settlement in Ohynso holds a Withdrawal writ: the route it takes, the inland village that has agreed to receive it, the stock cached along the way, the season the move is rehearsed, and the order in which its mills, granaries, and bridges are to be destroyed behind it. The writs are public. They are read aloud annually, revised by the Warden's clerks, and drilled — badly in the interior, seriously within two days' ride of the border. Nothing about the Withdrawal is secret, because secrecy would defeat it: the plan works as deterrence only if the empire's staff officers know that taking Ohynso means taking empty ground, burnt mills, and a war of occupation against a population that is somewhere else.

Structure

A Warden rather than a duke — the title is ducal in law and martial in practice — elected for life by the assembly of settlement heads and removable by them for one cause only: failure to maintain the writs. Below the Warden sit the clerks of the ledger, who are the real permanent power, and the border captains, who are not permitted to hold land within the march they command.

Culture

Ohynsan culture is unsentimental about place and intensely sentimental about people, which visitors find disorienting. Buildings are made to be good enough and no better; there is a genuine cultural suspicion of grand construction, read as a hostage given to the enemy. What Ohynso invests in instead is portable — metalwork, textiles, instruments, and above all records and songs. The national literature is largely about leaving, and is not tragic about it. Marriage customs deliberately spread kin across the fallback network, so that no family withdraws into a village where it knows no one.

Public Agenda

Make the duchy expensive to take and worthless to hold, keep the receiving agreements inland in good repair, and give Revakgol no pretext — Ohynso is punctilious about border incidents and hands over its own raiders.

Assets

The Withdrawal writs and the ledger that maintains them; the cached stocks; the receiving agreements with inland communities; good agricultural land held on the explicit understanding that it may be surrendered; the border watch, which is small, professional, and the best-informed intelligence service in the cluster.

Agriculture And Industry

Grain, cattle, and orchard on strong soil — the duchy is a net exporter of food in most years and deliberately keeps a year's surplus dispersed inland rather than stored on the frontier. Portable crafts: fine metalwork, weaving, instrument-making.

History

The march has been raided for as long as there has been an empire to raid it. The Withdrawal is remembered as having been devised after a generation in which Ohynso tried to hold a fortified line, lost it, and lost most of a cohort of its people with it. The duchy stayed out of the Revakgol–Namuzdus Border War and the Deepmetal Wars as a matter of declared policy, and its neighbours' opinion of that neutrality depends heavily on whether they were fighting at the time. Revakgol's western incursions have repeatedly probed the march; the duchy's standing response is to empty the tested district, let it be taken, and reoccupy it when the column withdraws for want of anything to eat.

Territory

Frontier and near-frontier country corresponding to the spatial provinces of Halioraueur, Irdragyrthor, and Iymus. Borders the Empire of Revakgol to the east and Aalhotikyn, Nasun, Hihn, Tuzraag, Kokit, Siltuz, Súzyngol, Tovo, Ygtaani, and Namuzdus across the cluster.

Demography And Population

Medesjul majority; substantial Zegtuzsos and Saarotsos communities of long standing, whose position is complicated every time the empire moves and who are protected by explicit Warden's writ against reprisal. Jaajul and Kaetijul minorities inland.

Military

A standing border watch of a few thousand, trained for observation, delay, and demolition rather than battle. Ohynso does not attempt to win engagements and its officers are formally instructed not to try. Settlement levies exist to execute the Withdrawal, not to fight.

Foreign Relations

Toward Revakgol: correct, humble, and utterly unyielding on the one point that matters — the duchy will not accept client status, and has said so through three imperial reigns. Toward Tovo: cold. The two frontier duchies made opposite choices and neither has forgiven the other, since Tovo's tribute is read in Ohynso as subsidising the army across the border, and Ohynso's Withdrawal is read in Tovo as a plan to flee that leaves Tovo exposed. Toward Nasun and Aalhotikyn: dependent, and quietly resentful of how little either can actually do. Namuzdus is admired at a distance as the one neighbour that fought the empire and held.

Laws

Withdrawal law overrides all other law during a declared move, and the clerks of the ledger may requisition anything at all under it. Outside a move, settlement custom governs. The one crime the duchy punishes without mercy is falsifying a writ.

Capital

Iymus, by convention and without much conviction — the Warden's ledger travels, and the duchy's own writs assume the capital will be lost first.

Government System

Elective wardenship over an assembly of settlement heads; martial administration on the march.
