1 Ashen Regency Founder dies; no equal heir; northern Paathur autonomy + war-blood Dovjun ambition Dual courts ~decades; abandoned outer posts Consolidation hardens Code of Burned Stone; precedent that north can stand apart
2 Twin Pyres Overstretch to Tovo corridor + dual power centers; succession dispute mid-peak East Pyre (Vusokaar) vs West Pyre (Tovo marches) for decades Tovo and western/northern marches peel; peak never recovered; map’s small Zegtuzsos polities become long-term “lost rind”
3 Aasa Civil Wars Hollow legitimacy + Lokraasos birth vs Flame Throne monopoly + unpaid legions Near-total collapse 9550–9600; capital contested Empire survives smaller under Zurgaasyol; prophetic exception written into memory; purist vs reform fault line lasts into Fifth Age

Territory sketch (proposed)

Permanent heart (survives all crises)

  • Vusokaar and basalt plateau core
  • Eastern Silgolt Saarotsos clan-lands of the original forty
  • Integrated but subordinate Zegtuzsos near-north provinces that stayed after Great Wyrm War (not the far marches)

Founder high-water (post–Great Wyrm War, ~5905)

  • Full southern + northeastern eastern Silgolt dragonborn span of Kaemisyol’s generation
  • Paathur system preserved under empire (not erased)

Peak high-water (paper maximum, ~7800–8500, before/during Twin Pyres)

Per existing peak stub — never all of Silgolt:
- North: lands later associated with Yɔnírläht, Lekdɔzúhma
- West: corridor to Tovo and Súzyngol
- Special: Julot / Lingraasos under Nijitehk arrangement

After Twin Pyres (~8680+) — first durable shrink

Lost or reduced to client/hostile free status (map names as historical labels, not new country articles):
- Tovo (western high-water mark — secedes in practice)
- March polities in the rind: Zegkruz, Tuzraag, Siltuz, Aalhotikyn, Ohynso, Hihn, Kokit, Ygtaani, Urlyk, Ikirlyknek, Mize (and similar) — mix of free clutch-leagues, client Furaktuz who stopped answering Vusokaar, and neutral buffer towns

After Aasa (~9600–9680) — second durable shrink (near-cease then save the core)

  • Saved: Vusokaar + eastern core + selected loyal provinces
  • Not fully reconquered: most of the Twin Pyres lost rind; Aasa prioritizes unity of the spine over recovering every western watch-post
  • Clients: a few march lords re-swear under light tribute / military access
  • Hostile free: Unburned-leaning leagues remain outside; feed later “ritual rebellions” memory

Present (~13000 MV)

  • Empire still “mightiest” in the eastern core and institutional memory
  • Map fragmentation west/north of Revakgol reads as scar of empire, not random jigsaw

Aasa beat sheet (Arc 3)

Year (MV) Age Beat
9545 3145 AMD Born in Imperial Palace: first Lokraasos of the imperial line. Court splits between awe (“Kaemisyol come again”) and panic (Code of Burned Stone).
9545–9550 Childhood under failing Aalki / contested regents. Prophetic pressure; Rahvulhahnu-framed visions later claimed for her.
9550 3150 AMD Civil wars ignite in northern and western provinces (existing stub). Multiple factions form (see event draft).
~9555–9565 Empty / contested throne. Code purists refuse any non-Saarotsos succession narrative. Unburned leagues and western march lords stop tribute.
~9568–9575 Siege / dual occupation of Vusokaar (near-cease climax). Archives threatened; “empire of ashes” chronicles. Young Aasa among reformist warband / court remnant.
9575–9599 Reformist Dovjun + loyal legions coalesce around Aasa as living symbol. Campaigns reclaim roads to the capital, then break purist and march coalitions without full reconquest of old peak.
9600 3200 AMD Proclaimed Empress Zurgaasyol, the Cleansing Flame. Reign begins (existing character).
9600–9605 end 4th Age Emergency settlement: ceasefires, client oaths, purist exile/brand, Unburned amnesties selective. Caste reforms (bend hierarchy; do not abolish service/order).
9606+ 5th Age Stabilization continues into early ASS; Fifth Age named Gain and Loss — empire gained survival, lost illusion of endless expansion.
post-9605 Death year unknown (leave open; if later set, prefer mid–late 9700s). Legacy: savior + authoritarian; Flame Throne exception remembered as prophecy, not open precedent.

Faction map (civil wars)

Faction Base Wants Fate under Aasa
Throne loyalists Vusokaar remnant, some Dovaarein Continuity of Kairtis line Merge into her coalition
Code purists Core Saarotsos Saarotsos-only Flame Throne; reject Lokraasos empress Broken; leaders exiled, branded, or killed; doctrine bent not erased
Northern Unburned / clutch leagues Far Zegtuzsos provinces Paathur sovereignty, end supremacy doctrine Some crushed, some negotiated free/client; dual memory continues
Western march lords Tovo corridor remnants Independence under imperial titles Mostly stay out; few re-swear as light clients
Reformist Dovjun Mixed Survive as one body Win with Aasa

Summary

After Kaemisyol’s death, Revakgol enters a prolonged succession crisis: a Dovaarein-led regency in Vusokaar contests a northern Zegtuzsos-leaning counter-court while outer garrisons thin. The empire splits in practice, shrinks at the edges, and only reunifies through the later Consolidation Wars — at the cost of a harder caste doctrine.

Causes

Kaemisyol (born Zelguu Kairtis) dies without an equal successor. His mythos as Vaazaa’Dovaajun outstrips any living claimant. War-blood Dovjun, palace kin, and northern Mulaagjuns each hold partial legitimacy: blood, conquest-right, or the Paathur bargains of the Great Wyrm War. The Dovaarein, designed as tradition’s guardians, becomes a regency council rather than a brief caretaker. Northern clutch-memory of the Wyrm War — public loyalty, private Unburned grief — finds opportunity in the vacuum.

Course

Vusokaar proclaims an Ashen Regency: the Flame Throne sits symbolically empty or under a weak interim Aalki whose decrees require Dovaarein countersign. In the northeast, a counter-court gathers around Paathur forms and at least one Saarotsos warlord who claims “northern flame-right.” Roads between core and frontier fall to bandit-legions and unpaid Tufae. Far garrisons — posts beyond easy supply — are abandoned or go rogue under local Furaktuz who stop remitting tribute. The split is administrative and military more than a clean secession map: two centers issue contradictory law, tax, and Kori-license seals for decades. Skirmishes flare along river corridors and highland passes; full annihilation of either court never quite arrives.

Outcome

Neither court destroys the other. Exhaustion, famine risk, and fear of true dissolution push surviving Dovjun toward a hard reunification program later named the Consolidation Wars (6300–6400 MV). The regency era ends not with a beloved Aalki but with a restored single throne purchased by doctrine: Saarotsos supremacy and the Code of Burned Stone are sharpened so that “another Ashen century” becomes unthinkable to the victors.

Territorial Change

Shrink: outer northeastern and highland watch-lines thin; some clutch-lands revert to negotiated Paathur autonomy under thin imperial fiction. Split: dual courts (Vusokaar vs northern counter-court) for much of 6027–6299 MV. Core eastern Saarotsos provinces remain the only continuous spine. No foreign conquest of Vusokaar.

Legacy

First proof that Revakgol can fracture without a foreign invader. Establishes the political habit of overcorrecting chaos with caste rigidity — seed of later cultural decay and of the purist factions that will oppose Aasa Kairtis. Zegtuzsos oral memory records the counter-court as a near-restoration; imperial archives call it rebellion. Both memories survive.

Summary

Revakgol reunifies after the Ashen Regency: core eastern territories are reconsolidated and the caste structure hardens into imperial doctrine. Saarotsos dominance becomes law within the realm — not across Silgolt as a whole. Even then the empire remains an eastern power, far short of continental control.

Causes

Dual courts, rogue Furaktuz, and unpaid legions of the Ashen Regency make rule-by-bargain unsustainable. Merchants, temple Kovahiil, and exhausted Dovjun demand a single seal of law. Victorious reunifiers treat flexibility as the disease that nearly killed the founder’s work.

Course

A sequence of campaigns and forced accords (not one continuous front) reasserts Vusokaar’s writ over the eastern core and near-north provinces. Northern counter-court leaders are killed, co-opted, or reduced to subordinate Paathur roles under stricter imperial appointment. Roads and garrison towns are rebuilt with an eye to preventing dual capitals. Legal scribes carve sharpened versions of the Code of Burned Stone: rights and ceilings by bloodline and Kori path; Flame Throne eligibility framed as Saarotsos inheritance of Kaemisyol’s will.

Outcome

Single Aalki authority restored. Dovaarein returns to advisory-traditional role rather than open regency. Daiintuz sectors reorganized. The empire is smaller than Kaemisyol’s late dream but more bureaucratically coherent than during the fracture.

Territorial Change

Reknit of eastern core and selected northern provinces. Permanent abandonment of some far posts from the Regency shrink. No claim to all Silgolt. Stage set for later Fourth Age expansion toward peak, not immediate continental empire.

Legacy

Doctrine over memory: Consolidation is taught as strength recovered, not as fear of the Ashen century. The hardened caste order becomes the cage later generations live inside — fuel for peak-era stagnation and, centuries later, for purists who will reject Aasa Kairtis as a winged violation of Burned Stone.

Revakgol Imperial Peak and Cultural Decay

history.events.revakgol_imperial_peak_and_cultural_decay event fourth_age

Revakgol reaches its greatest territorial size — still never spanning Silgolt as a whole. At its farthest extent, imperial control reaches north toward the lands of modern Yɔnírläht and Lekdɔzúhma, and west to modern Tovo and Súzyngol. That peak overlaps with stagnation: rigid caste, Kaegromik abuse, Tazri panic, and hollow Aalki. The Twin Pyres Schism mid-period splits the empire administratively and begins the first durable territorial peel.

Summary

Revakgol reaches its greatest territorial size — still never spanning Silgolt as a whole. At its farthest extent, imperial control reaches north toward the lands of modern Yɔnírläht and Lekdɔzúhma, and west to modern Tovo and Súzyngol. That peak overlaps with stagnation: rigid caste, Kaegromik abuse, Tazri panic, and hollow Aalki. The Twin Pyres Schism mid-period splits the empire administratively and begins the first durable territorial peel.

Causes

Fourth Age relative stability abroad lets Daiintuz pour stone into roads and garrison towns. Consolidation doctrine becomes expansion ideology: rectification of chaos as sacred task. Trade and Kori logistics support deeper western and northern pushes. Success breeds court luxury and bureaucratic sclerosis; the Code of Burned Stone, meant to prevent another Ashen Regency, freezes mobility and breeds provincial contempt.

Course

Early–mid period: Long Roads west toward the Tovo corridor; northern march fortresses; Julot’s Lingraasos arrangement stabilizes as a special administrative zone under the Nijitehk. Peak size is real on maps and tribute rolls — and already brittle. Mid-period (see Twin Pyres Schism, ~8400–8680 MV): dual imperial claimants / East–West administrative split. Late period: even where a single Aalki is recognized, cultural decay deepens — corruption in Furaktuz offices, Kaegromik terms stretched as punishment theater, Tazri licensing used for faction blackmail, Unburned ritual risings in the north, art and speech formalized into lifeless repetition.

Outcome

By ~9000 MV the empire is no longer at true peak. Western and some northern gains are lost, clientized, or ignored. The core still calls itself eternal. Historians later treat 7800–9000 as one named era because imperial chronicles boasted of size while private letters already spoke of rot.

Territorial Change

Rise to high-water (N: Yɔnírläht / Lekdɔzúhma labels; W: Tovo / Súzyngol). Never whole Silgolt. After Twin Pyres: durable shrink of western marches and fragments of the north into free, client, or hostile polities (later map neighbors such as Tovo and other Zegtuzsos-coded states). Core eastern heartland remains.

Legacy

Peak becomes a wound disguised as glory. Later Aalki invoke High Flame maps they cannot garrison. Provincial elites learn they can survive without Vusokaar’s seal. Sets board for Hollow Marches and the civil wars of Aasa’s childhood. Imperial motto Endure And Shape is taught as expansion; survivors of the peel hear it as endurance after failure.

The Twin Pyres Schism

Summary

At mid-peak, Revakgol splits into two imperial administrations: the East Pyre at Vusokaar and the West Pyre in the Tovo marches. For decades both issue law, mint loyalty, and claim the Aalki’s fire. When the schism ends, the west is not truly reabsorbed — Tovo and neighboring march polities peel into clients, neutrals, or free clutch-leagues. The empire’s greatest map becomes a memory.

Causes

Overstretch along the western Long Road creates a second gravity well: march armies, Deepmetal-adjacent trade (still limited), and Furaktuz who answer logistics more than basalt palace politics. A contested succession (blood claim in Vusokaar vs war-mandate of a Western Daiintuz or march Aalki-claimant) coincides with Dovaarein deadlock. Peak wealth funds two courts instead of one reconciliation.

Course

East Pyre: traditional capital, Code priesthood, older clan Dovaarein, eastern legions. West Pyre: fortress-court in the Tovo marches (proposed name: Kaer’Zulkath, “Ember-Hold of the West” — not a map country; a historical fortress label). Each appoints rival Daiintuz, seals Tazri licenses, and brands the other usurper. Open field battles are fewer than sieges of depots and assassinations of Junir. Zegtuzsos march populations are courted by both sides with promises of Paathur dignity or tax relief; Unburned cells exploit the noise. Neither side can destroy the other’s core for nearly three generations of officers.

Outcome

Settlement favors Vusokaar’s line on paper: West Pyre claimant dies, abdicates, or accepts a lesser title. In practice the western machinery of rule does not return intact. March lords who fed the West Pyre keep arms, tolls, and local law. Imperial maps still shade Tovo for a time; tribute becomes irregular, then ceremonial, then absent.

Territorial Change

Administrative split of the empire ~8400–8680 MV. After reunification-in-name: durable loss of direct rule over Tovo corridor and fragments of northern/western marches. Many later map polities (Tovo, and Zegtuzsos-coded neighbors such as Zegkruz, Tuzraag, Siltuz, Aalhotikyn, Ohynso, Hihn, Kokit, Ygtaani, Urlyk, Ikirlyknek, Mize) inherit this peel as free, client, or hostile status — exact mix varies by locality and century. Eastern core remains East Pyre continuous.

Legacy

Second great proof of fracture — this time at maximum size, so the shame is greater. “Twin Pyres” becomes a curse in Vusokaar (“do not light a second hearth”). Western oral histories remember a near-capital of their own. Sets the Hollow Marches: an empire that still speaks as if peak maps were law. Direct ancestor of the multi-faction civil wars that nearly end the state in Aasa’s youth.

Summary

Civil wars erupt across Revakgol’s northern and western provinces and then consume the core. Multiple factions — Code purists, Unburned clutch-leagues, western march lords, weak throne loyalists, and reformist Dovjun — shatter imperial unity. For a generation the empire almost ceases: tribute fails, legions desert, and Vusokaar itself is contested. The crisis unfolds through Aasa Kairtis’s childhood and ends only when she rises as Empress Zurgaasyol.

Prelude

By the late Fourth Age the Twin Pyres peel and cultural decay have left a hollow center. Peak maps still hang in the palace; western marches answer late or not at all. Kaegromik and Tazri licenses are faction weapons. In 9545 MV the imperial family bears Aasa Kairtis — first Lokraasos of the line, wings and all. Prophets of Rahvulhahnu and street flame-priests cry “Kaemisyol come again.” Code jurists of Burned Stone call the birth an omen of pollution: the Flame Throne is Saarotsos inheritance, not winged exception. The sitting Aalki (name left open for later king-list work) is weak or dying; Dovaarein splits. Northern Unburned leagues and western march lords smell Ashen Regency weather again — and this time they have practice.

Causes

Structural: unpaid frontier legions, Furaktuz autonomy after Twin Pyres, caste rigidity without founder charisma. Immediate: succession crisis colliding with Aasa’s prophetic birth. Ideological: purists vs reformists vs anti-imperial clutch sovereignty. No single foreign invasion explains the fall; the empire burns from within.

Factions
Throne Loyalists

Vusokaar remnant court, some Dovaarein elders, palace Kovahiil. Want continuity of Kairtis blood and a single seal of law. Initially weak; survive by attaching to Aasa later.

Code Purists

Core Saarotsos provinces, Burned Stone jurists, officers who treat Kaemisyol’s supremacy doctrine as closed. Refuse any Lokraasos — or any “prophecy theater” — on the Flame Throne. Prefer a Saarotsos Aalki of side blood or a permanent Dovaarein directory.

Northern Unburned And Clutch Leagues

Far and mid-north Zegtuzsos lands still half-inside imperial fiction. Want Paathur sovereignty restored in truth, end of Saarotsos ceiling, and an end to Day of Flame triumphalism. Not a single army; a lattice of clutches and secret songs.

Western March Lords

Tovo corridor and Twin Pyres rind. Want de facto independence while keeping imperial titles for dignity and trade. Fight when Vusokaar tries to re-garrison; otherwise let the core bleed.

Reformist Dovjun

Mixed bloodlines and younger officers, later Aasa’s spine. Want the empire to survive as one body even if caste bends. Willing to use prophecy, wings, and terror as tools.

Course

9550 MV: northern and western risings begin as tax revolts and ritual defiance; purist coups follow in core garrisons. Rival Aalki proclamations multiply — five serious claims at the worst count (hence “Wars of the Five Claims” in some chronicles). Daiintuz stop synchronized remittance; local Junir mint emergency law. ~9555–9565: throne empty or rotating through short-lived puppets; Aasa grows up between cellars, flight, and war-camps. ~9568–9575: near-cessation climax — Vusokaar under siege and, for a span, dual occupation (purist ward vs reformist/loyalist ward; Unburned raids on the outer ring). Archive vaults are barricaded; later writers call this the Guttering — the flame nearly out. 9575–9599: reformist coalition forms around Aasa as living standard: winged proof, Kori presence, ruthless clarity. Campaigns retake the capital roads, break purist field armies, buy or burn march coalitions. She does not attempt full reconquest of Twin Pyres high-water; every league spent on the spine.

Near Cessation

Criteria met in contemporary and later record: (1) no uncontested Aalki for years; (2) capital contested/occupied; (3) majority of provinces fail tribute; (4) legion desertion to local Furaktuz; (5) chroniclers use death-language — “empire of ashes,” “the flame guttered,” “Revakgol was a name without a road.” Foreign powers probe borders lightly but do not take Vusokaar — the death is internal.

Outcome

Military and political victory for the reformist coalition under Aasa, proclaimed Empress Zurgaasyol, the Cleansing Flame, in 9600 MV. Purist leadership destroyed, exiled, or branded. Selective Unburned amnesties and harsh examples. Western marches largely left outside direct rule. The civil wars end as a state-survival event, not a full territorial restoration.

Territorial Change

Shrink confirmed: eastern core saved; most Twin Pyres lost rind remains free, client, or hostile (Tovo and other march labels). Split ends as multi-faction war, not stable dual empire. Almost ceases as a functioning single state ~9555–9575. Post-war map is smaller than peak and smaller than even late decay pretenses.

Legacy

The wound against which all later imperial memory is measured. Aasa becomes savior and warning. Prophetic exception for a Lokraasos empress is remembered without opening the throne to “any wings.” Purist vs reform fault line sleeps under the Code and wakes in Fifth Age reformation crises. Zegtuzsos dual memory gains a second scar-layer: some clutches aided her; some fought her; all remember the Guttering. Motto Endure And Shape is re-taught as survival through cleansing fire.

The Cleansing Flame Restoration

history.events.the_cleansing_flame_restoration event fourth_age

From 9600 MV, Empress Aasa Kairtis — Zurgaasyol, the Cleansing Flame — ends the civil wars’ active phase, reasserts a single throne in Vusokaar, and reforms caste practice enough to keep the spine alive. The empire survives smaller: eastern core restored, lost western and northern rind mostly not reconquered. Her reign bridges the Fourth Age’s end into the Fifth Age’s uneasy recovery.

Summary

From 9600 MV, Empress Aasa Kairtis — Zurgaasyol, the Cleansing Flame — ends the civil wars’ active phase, reasserts a single throne in Vusokaar, and reforms caste practice enough to keep the spine alive. The empire survives smaller: eastern core restored, lost western and northern rind mostly not reconquered. Her reign bridges the Fourth Age’s end into the Fifth Age’s uneasy recovery.

Causes

Military victory of the reformist coalition; exhaustion of purist and march forces; popular and priestly investment in Aasa as prophetic Lokraasos exception (“Kaemisyol reborn”). Without settlement, desertion and famine finish what civil war began.

Course

9600: proclamation as Empress; Yol’Kaeyoog-style emergency rule used surgically then relaxed into reformed law. Purges of purist command networks; public flame-rites that frame wings as cleansing sign, not Code breach. Negotiated client oaths with a minority of western/northern lords; deliberate non-campaign against most free marches (treasury and blood spent). Caste reforms: limited mobility for proven service; Kaegromik review courts; Tazri licensing recentralized; Paathur dignity reaffirmed under imperial appointment rules sharper than Ashen chaos but softer than late-peak humiliation. Dovaarein reseated with mixed loyalist and reformist blood. 9600–9605: Fourth Age closes on a state that exists again. Early Fifth Age: consolidation of roads, archives, and legion pay — the quiet work after the spectacle.

Outcome

Revakgol continues as a single empire in the eastern core. Aasa’s legitimacy rests on victory + prophecy + reform, not on undoing Burned Stone entirely. Death year remains historically fogged (open); focus of record is reign-as-salvation.

Territorial Change

No return to Twin Pyres high-water. Core + selected loyal provinces = restored direct rule. Clients = light tribute and military access. Free/hostile rind = later map neighbors. Julot/Lingraasos special zone preserved where it did not fully bolt.

Legacy

Template for later “Flame Renewal” language in Fifth Age reforms. Authoritarian stability: unity above mercy. Inspires Lokraasos veneration and purist underground alike. Explains present-day strength without present-day continental size. Bridges to Fifth Age foreign wars that seek metal and pride, not full reconquest of every lost watch-post.

Proposed bridges for existing Fifth-Age Revakgol stubs

Status: PROPOSED — 1–2 sentence add-ons for content.summary / content.bridge when promoting.
Do not invent new major crises here; only connect to Arcs 1–3 scars.

Revakgol's Western Incursions (10906–10931 MV)

Bridge: Still smaller than Twin Pyres high-water, the restored empire probes Namuzdus passes for Deepmetal and prestige — expansion as pride, not recovery of every lost march. March free-polities on the old rind sometimes hire out as scouts or blockers.

The Revakgol–Namuzdus Border War (11506–11556 MV)

Bridge: A limited war the post-Aasa state can afford: legion strength without reopening the Guttering’s multi-front collapse. Stalemate and trade pacts suit an empire that remembers near-cessation.

Revakgol's Internal Reformation / Flame Renewal (12006–12031 MV)

Bridge: Reformers echo Zurgaasyol’s language of cleansing and limited caste flex, now aimed at Kaekreaedhel blood rites; purists recycle Burned Stone arguments last used against a winged empress. Scar tissue of Arc 3, not a new founding.

The Deepmetal Wars (12206–12231 MV)

Bridge: Full invasion appetite returns only after centuries of core stability — and still ends in treaty, not a redraw of Silgolt. Ambition without the delusion of eternal peak maps.

The Revakgol Reformation Crisis (12706–12731 MV)

Bridge: Second-order civil unrest: integration schism rather than empty throne. Ends with reformers prevailing and purist exiles — a contained rhyme of 9550–9600, not a second Guttering.

Izheim / Web of the Hidden Flame (context only)

Bridge: Gnome and Kaekreaedhel movements on the western approaches grow in the political space left by Revakgol’s peel; the empire is a neighbor and sometimes a destination for forged identities, not always the hegemon of every peninsula.

Proposed value

Born into Revakgol's imperial family as the first Lokraasos of the line, Aasa entered the world already a schism: prophets named her Kaemisyol reborn; Burned Stone jurists named her a violation. The civil wars of 9550–9600 MV — the Guttering — filled her childhood with contested thrones, deserted legions, and a capital that forgot how to be singular. She rose with reformist Dovjun, took the throne in 9600 as Empress Zurgaasyol, the Cleansing Flame, and chose the spine over the old peak map: purists broken, marches mostly left free or client, caste bent enough to live. She preserved Revakgol from cessation, not from scar.
