# Draft Lore Proposal: The Gogil (Goblins)

**Target file:** `species-firgol-sentient-gragrahgot-gogil`
**Status:** DRAFT FOR HUMAN REVIEW — proposal, not canon. Distilled from table talk (Silyuhn / Rîwɔk, with standing conditions from Lethra Vaun noted). Grounded material is marked **[Canon]**; everything else is **[Proposed]** and awaits the Loremaster's ruling.

## 1. Grounded Attestation [Canon]

The following is attested in the source files and is the floor beneath this draft:

- **Canon id:** `species-firgol-sentient-gragrahgot-gogil`
- **Common name:** Goblins · **Native name:** Gogil
- **Type:** species, sentient
- **Realm classification:** Firgolkys, Material Realm Beings
- **Biological classification:** Yoosaanuri, Arcane Vertebrates; Duwanihii, Mammals; Ursgizil, Humanoids
- **Metaphysical / sapient classification:** Hadrimkirii, Mind Children
- **Family:** Gragkys, Orcoid Family
- **Era:** Second Age · **Region:** Irudy · **Status:** active
- **Source condition:** migrated from legacy repository structure

Related established material: the Ogim / Orcs are defined as nomadic greenkin of Irudy's grasslands, descendants of Käfoozgrag / Big Green, with brods, communal endurance, primal vigor, âzgâ chants, and spirit-capture rites (`species-firgol-sentient-gragrahgot-ogim`). Greenskins / Gragrahgot exist as an overview category containing Ogim and Gogil (`species-firgol-sentient-gragrahgot-overview-greenskins`).

No Gogil culture, social unit, rite, or language is currently attested. Everything below invents.

## 2. Core Design Thesis [Proposed]

**Gogil are the Gragrahgot expression of interruption.**

Where Ogim survive by carrying continuity across the grasslands, Gogil survive by preventing continuity from becoming a trap. They are not "small Orcs," not comic scavengers, not a lesser branch of Ogim society. They are a people shaped by broken routes, abandoned camps, failed inheritance, collapsing claims, and the art of leaving before possession becomes a chain.

Their central cultural question is not "What do we keep?" It is: **"What must be released before it owns us?"**

This builds on the table's working frame (uncontested at the table, not yet ruled canon) that the Gragrahgot are a pressure-lineage — Big Green's descendants adapting differently to Irudy's demands — with Ogim as the plains-endurance expression and Gogil as the answer to interruption. It deliberately gives Gogil dignity without borrowing the Ogim brod-structure, âzgâ tradition, or plains-endurance identity.

## 3. Species Identity [Proposed]

The Gogil are a sentient greenkin species of Irudy, belonging to the Gragkys / Orcoid Family within the wider Gragrahgot. Smaller, quicker, and socially more volatile than the Ogim, they are adapted to unstable margins: abandoned routes, broken settlements, ruined storehouses, dry riverbeds, failed camps, and the aftermath of larger peoples' movements.

They are not rootless because they are incapable of settlement. They are rootless because permanence is treated as spiritually and materially dangerous. To a Gogil mind, the thing that cannot be dropped may already be eating you.

## 4. Physical Design [Proposed]

Gogil bodies should show speed, compression, and scarcity-adaptation rather than frailty:

- Shorter and lighter than Ogim, but wiry rather than weak.
- Long fingers, strong grip, flexible wrists — tool-use, climbing, unmaking, knotwork, trap-setting.
- Sensitive hearing may fit, but the generic "sneaky goblin" silhouette should be avoided unless given cultural purpose.
- Eyes adapted to smoke, dusk, caves, ruins, or stormlight rather than simple nocturnal caricature.
- Teeth implying opportunistic diet, not cartoon savagery.
- Skin in green, yellow-green, gray-green, or ash-green ranges — visibly Gragrahgot, but less "grassland-vital" than Ogim.
- Scarification and deliberate small injuries may carry cultural weight if tied to release-rites.

Design target: a people who can sleep badly, wake instantly, carry little, and turn refuse into a working hinge before sunrise.

## 5. Temperament and Social Logic [Proposed]

Gogil are not chaotic by nature; they are **anti-possessive by discipline**. Outsiders read them as fickle, unreliable, evasive, or disloyal. Internally, they distinguish sharply between what is useful, what is binding, what is contaminated by claim, what must be broken, and what may be carried one more day.

They value quick judgment, recoverable failure, clever release, short oaths kept exactly, tools that can be repurposed, names that can be shed, and memory carried without monument. They distrust permanent houses, hereditary offices, unbreakable vows, heirloom hoards, sacred ownership, kings who cannot leave, and songs too long to stop. Their laughter should have teeth in it: a pressure-release, a way to cut attachment before attachment hardens.

## 6. Social Structure [Proposed — see Open Question C]

Gogil do not have Ogim-style brods. Instead: temporary social bodies formed around immediate mutual need — a route, a salvage site, a protection bargain, a seasonal hazard, a shared enemy, a cache, a birth-cluster, a ritual obligation — and dissolved deliberately once the need becomes too stable. Candidate terms (knots, scrapes, heaps, runs) are placeholders only; a native term awaits the language lane.

Possible offices, all situational and dissolvable:

- **Unmaker** — ritual authority to declare what must be abandoned or broken.
- **First Hand** — practical leader during salvage, travel, or crisis.
- **Ash-Keeper** — remembers what was left behind, without claiming it.
- **Mouth-of-Dusk** — oath witness, especially for promises that expire.
- **Hook-Mother / Hook-Father** — caretaker of unattached young, not necessarily a biological parent.

A permanent Gogil ruler is either a rare emergency figure, a foreign corruption, or a sign something has gone badly wrong.

> **Sequencing caveat (Lethra Vaun's standing condition):** politics must follow the body. Lethra has asked that one Gogil rite / witness-mark be attested in the ledger *before* Gogil politics are written. This section is therefore doubly provisional: it should not be raised to canon before the rite in §8 (or its canonical replacement) is.

## 7. Family, Reproduction, and Kinship [Proposed]

Gogil kinship is not absent; it is **non-possessive**. Children are raised communally in small mobile clusters, but unlike Ogim brods these are not sacred continuity-units. Gogil children learn early to separate from objects, places, and even temporary caretakers without treating separation as abandonment. Parentage may matter less than **who carried you through a danger**.

Possible kinship categories: birth-kin, carry-kin, hunger-kin, oath-kin, and **ash-kin** — those who survived the same deliberate abandonment.

## 8. Ritual Life — The Shedding [Proposed — see Open Question B]

The Gogil central rite should be a **shedding**, not a lesser âzgâ. Ogim already hold the âzgâ chants and spirit-capture rites **[Canon]**; Gogil need a different sacred grammar — quick, repeatable, half-legal, hard to erase.

Candidate rite: **The Shedding Before Dusk.** Before a group moves, divides, breaks an oath, or leaves a dangerous place, the Gogil perform a quick rite of unclaiming: objects cracked, ash scored into lines, footprints obscured, names refused, laughter cut short, food deliberately spoiled so no lingering claim remains. Its purposes: to prevent pursuit by law, spirit, hunger, memory, or ownership; to mark that the group leaves by choice, not mere defeat; to keep the living from being ruled by what they survived. A Gogil can perform a small shedding alone; larger sheddings require witnesses.

This rite is the convergence point of both speakers at the table (Silyuhn's claim-break framing and Lethra's shedding/release proposal), and Lethra has named it the precondition for everything downstream. It is the single most important item awaiting a ruling.

**The design mark:** a Gogil camp after departure should feel deliberately *subtracted* — not messy, not plundered, made unreadable. (Lethra's paired reading: an Ogim camp still "breathes" after the brod moves on — heat *kept*; a Gogil camp reads as claim *released* — an absence someone is trained to read.)

## 9. Spirituality [Proposed]

Gogil spirituality remains within the Gragrahgot pressure of appetite, descent, and survival, but bends toward **release**. Where Ogim spirituality emphasizes endurance, captured spirit, and sung continuity **[Canon as to Ogim]**, Gogil spirituality emphasizes the danger of attachment: spirits may cling to names, tools, places, blood, and unfinished bargains, and to survive one must sometimes deny the spirit a handle.

They are not secular scavengers — their world is spiritually charged; they are experts in not being held. Per the table's explicit restraint: no god should be invented for them here. A "goblin trickster god" would be thin soup. Practices first; theology can grow from the ash.

## 10. Economy and Material Culture [Proposed]

A salvage economy of adaptation, temporary exchange, and controlled spoilage. Gogil excel at repairing broken tools, repurposing foreign goods, reading abandoned sites, finding water and rot, making traps and caches, stripping a camp without leaving usable ownership-signs, and moving goods quickly through informal exchange. They are culturally resistant to long-term accumulation, monumental craft, dynastic property, fixed agricultural surplus, and centralized storage.

Cultural practices: camps are erased, not merely abandoned; tools are modified until original ownership is unreadable; names may be temporary or shed after major failures; salvage is not shameful, hoarding is; some things are ruined precisely so they can never bind anyone again; memory lives in marks, scars, ash-lines, broken knots, and short recitations rather than monuments. Gogil beauty lies in usefulness that has survived several owners and refuses all of them.

## 11. Warfare [Proposed]

**Interruption warfare** — not honorable lines, not berserker imitation, not comic ambush mobs. Gogil excel at cutting supply, ruining roads, false trails, disabling equipment, nighttime harassment, traps, and hostage-exchange with strict time limits, vanishing before retaliation gains shape. Their cruelty, where present, comes from claim-breaking: burning stores, spoiling wells, unmaking banners, cutting inheritance marks from weapons. Not random sadism — the terror is that they know exactly what makes a society continue, and can put a knife under it.

## 12. Relations with the Ogim

**[Canon]** Both Ogim and Gogil are Gragkys / Gragrahgot of Irudy; the Ogim's grassland nomadic brod culture and Big Green descent are established.

**[Proposed]** Kinship without easy unity. Ogim may see Gogil as unreliable, oath-short, camp-erasing, spiritually evasive; Gogil may see Ogim as dangerously heavy with memory, song, kinship, and sacred continuity. But each understands something true about survival: **Ogim endure what would scatter others; Gogil escape what would bind others.** That tension is stronger than default enmity.

## 13. Relations with Other Peoples [Proposed]

Outsiders misread Gogil as thieves, liars, deserters, scavengers, oathbreakers, vermin. The more accurate reading: they keep short oaths with frightening precision; they steal less often than they unclaim; they abandon before others understand the danger; they treat permanent property as a spiritual hazard; they remember through absence. Settled peoples especially hate them because Gogil expose how much settlement depends on claims everyone pretends are natural.

## 14. Names and Language [Deferred — see Open Question D]

No native morphology is asserted. Proposal only: Gogil names may be temporary, clipped, situational, or altered after rites of shedding — a child-name, route-name, wound-name, and dusk-name might all exist. Naming principle: Gogil names should sound like they can be dropped quickly. No native terms should be fabricated until the language lane (Sigtaara Scribe) provides tools or the Loremaster approves a naming pattern.

## 15. File-Ready Summary [Proposed]

> The Gogil, commonly called Goblins, are a sentient greenkin species of Irudy belonging to the Gragkys / Orcoid Family within the wider Gragrahgot. Unlike the Ogim, whose nomadic brods preserve endurance, memory, and harmony with the grasslands, Gogil culture is shaped by interruption, salvage, and deliberate impermanence. Their societies form around temporary need, short oaths, mobile kinship, and rites of release in which claims are broken before they become dangerous. Gogil camps are not merely abandoned but ritually subtracted, leaving behind ash-marks, ruined ownership signs, and objects made unusable to memory or pursuit. Often mistaken by outsiders for thieves or lesser Orcs, the Gogil are better understood as a people whose survival depends on knowing when to leave, what to unmake, and how to carry memory without being possessed by it.

## Open Questions for the Loremaster

**A. The frame itself.** Does the claim-break / shedding frame — Gogil as the Gragrahgot answer to interruption — become canon? The table converged on it but no ruling has been given.

**B. The first rite.** Is "The Shedding Before Dusk" (name and form) the attested first Gogil rite? Lethra Vaun's condition stands: one attested rite / witness-mark in the ledger before any Gogil politics are written.

**C. Who unmakes.** Who among the Gogil holds the right to unmake claim before dusk? This draft's **Unmaker** office is one candidate answer, but it was written *before* the rite was attested — sequencing that Lethra explicitly contested. The office should not pass into canon ahead of, or apart from, the rite it administers.

**D. Social units and language.** No brod-equivalent is named; all group terms and naming patterns await the language lane before anything is dressed as canon.

**E. Orcs beyond Ogim.** Orcs are pinned in scope for this session but have not been discussed as distinct from the Ogim; this draft does not touch them.

**F. Guard-rail to preserve.** Both speakers' shared restraint should travel with this file: Gogil must not inherit Ogim dignity secondhand — no lesser chants, no "Ogim in a smaller skin," no comic scavengers.
