## Package overview: the memory economy of Thalon

Status: **accepted** · Kind: **overview** · Version: **2**

```json
{
  "markdown": "## Thesis\n\nThalon's founding date and its stated lifespan do not reconcile. The Second Triumvirate was declared 12 Daazil, ASS 1494 (MV 11100). The present year is 130 ABP (MV 13000) — a gap of 1,900 years. Canon gives Kaelotaedhel a lifespan of 260–300 years, yet Elyndor, Thalira and Vorian are listed as the sitting Triumvirs with active portfolios.\n\nThis package treats that gap as deliberate rather than as an error to be patched away. The proposal: the three names are offices, and each holder inherits the previous holder's memory by the endocannibalistic rite canon already assigns to Thalonian elders. Inherited memory arrives in the first person, so each successor sincerely remembers founding the state. No one in the Spire is lying. The fraud is structural, not conspiratorial, and survives any Methraug oath-fire you light under it.\n\nFrom that single move, three connected institutions follow, and all three are already half-seeded in existing canon and in the Write-section song *They Did Not Bind The Tree*.\n\n## What each item does\n\n1. **The Continuance** (new entity) — the Triumvir succession rite. Establishes offices-not-people, seven holders across six transmissions, and memory drift as the reason the three Triumvirs now hold irreconcilable first-hand accounts of the same founding day.\n2. **The Reckoning of Removes** (new entity) — the memory economy. A *remove* is one mouth between a holder and an original experience. Ael'voriin rank keys off it. Covers seeding (forged provenance), dilution (the memory analogue of the interbreeding taboo), and the standing jurisdictional fight between the Sphere of the Inner and the Sphere of Treasure over whether memory is property.\n3. **The Unity Edict** (new event entity) — MV 12580 / ASS 2975. Gives the Edict the mechanic the song already specifies: carved into the hand by Methraug-fire, binding *utterance and naming*, not thought or memory. Explains the tolerance clause as the price of getting all seven cults to co-sign enforcement. Names the bark loophole as an unintended consequence.\n4. **The Grove Reading** (new entity) — the Veil-Lifting transcription rite, and the loophole in practice: carving is not saying, hesyaziz wood is sacred and uncuttable, and scribes copy grove-marks into the archive because the archive is holy and the holy is not weighed.\n5. **The Contaminated Archive** (prose) — why the state does not close the loophole, and the payoff: if inherited memory degrades and bark does not, the groves hold the only accurate account of MV 11100, annotated for centuries by the people Thalon erased.\n6. **The Dilution Gambit** (prose) — Sixth Age hooks only, deliberately unresolved, since the Sixth Age is the play era.\n7. **Two field patches on the Thalon entity** — one adding a succession-and-continuity section, one replacing the climate description with map-derived biome data per the standing authority rule (map wins geography; article wins culture and specific places).\n8. **Relation edges** wiring the three traditions to Thalon and cross-referencing the Edict from the Consolidation Phase event.\n\n## Open questions for review\n\n- **New namespace.** Items 1, 2 and 4 are filed under a `traditions.` prefix that does not yet exist in the index, though a `tradition` template guideline does. Relocate or rename freely — the ids are the least considered part of this package.\n- **The founding date does not reconcile.** The ASS-to-MV offset is 9605, confirmed by four independent date pairs (ASS 1445 / MV 11050 and ASS 1595 / MV 11200 in the reformation_of_thalon timeline; ASS 1445–3265 / MV 11050–12870 in the Thalon article). AMD and ABP are internally consistent too, at 6400 and 12870. Exactly one date in canon fails: Thalon's own founding_date, '12 of Daazil, ASS 1494 (MV 11100)', which implies 9606. Under 9605 the founding falls in either ASS 1495 or MV 11099. The calendar gives no excuse — the year opens on 1 Etzil with Sin'Ruvos and Daazil is the third of five months, so 12 Daazil sits mid-year and cannot straddle a boundary. The Unity Edict item follows 9605 and records ASS 2975. Whether the founding date gets tidied on canonisation or kept as a discrepancy the setting means is yours to decide; keeping it is thematically on-message for a package about a state that cannot establish when it was founded.\n- **How much drift?** The Continuance item sets the current Triumvirs at six removes from the founding and lets their accounts diverge. If you want the drift tighter or looser, that number is the dial.\n- **Does the state know?** As written, the Sphere of the Inner knows about the bark loophole and protects it, because closing it would void the archive that is the Inner's entire claim to authority. The alternative — genuine institutional blindness — is less interesting but easier to run at the table.\n- **Sindala naming.** All three traditions carry English descriptive names. If you want native coinages I can run candidates through the lexicon and translation tools before you accept.\n\n## Held back\n\nZok'othrond, the First Triumvirate, the Unbinding Purge, the Deep Harmony Pact and the Tide Accord are not in this package. The Unity Edict is included despite being on that list because items 1, 4, 5 and 6 all depend on its mechanic being fixed first."
The three names of the Second Triumvirate are therefore offices, not persons. Elyndor the Veilweaver has been seven people. So have Thalira and Vorian.",
    "history": "Thalonian elder-consumption is far older than the Triumvirate and was never invented for this purpose; the Continuance is an application of an existing rite rather than a new one. The first use is undocumented by design. The likeliest account, reconstructed from the shape of the institution rather than from any record, is that the first Elyndor was dying in the second century after the Reformation with the state still unconsolidated, and that the other two Triumvirs chose continuity over succession crisis. Nothing was decided in principle. The precedent simply held, and by the time anyone might have questioned it there was no one alive who remembered a Triumvirate that worked any other way — the memory of the alternative having been eaten along with everything else.\n\nAcross MV 11100 to 13000, with a Kaelotaedhel lifespan of 260 to 300 years, each seat has turned over roughly six times. The current holders are the seventh of their names and stand six removes from the founding.",
    "execution": "The rite is performed in a sealed chamber beneath the Grand Spire, attended only by the other two Triumvirs and by no scribe. The dying Triumvir spends the final weeks in continuous recitation, surfacing and ordering memory for transfer; this is the most demanding part and failure here produces a defective inheritance. Consumption follows immediately upon death and must be complete. The successor is then confined for between one and four years while the inherited life integrates, during which the seat's public functions are handled by the remaining two — a period Thalonian administration records blandly as a portfolio recess.",
    "components_and_tools": "Memory-sanctification apparatus drawn from the Sphere of the Inner's funerary practice, at a grade otherwise reserved for the highest Ael'voriin. Flux drawn from Ael'theryn's repositories. No hesyaziz wood is permitted in the chamber and nothing is inscribed during or after the rite, which is the single strongest piece of evidence that the practice is understood to be concealed.",
    "participants_and_key_roles": "The dying Triumvir; the designated successor, who is always Ael'voriin and always of short remove; the two surviving Triumvirs as sole witnesses. No cult officiates. The Cult of the Sentinel's Archive, which governs every other Thalonian memory rite, is deliberately excluded — a detail that has caused friction with the Sphere of the Inner for the better part of a millennium without ever being raised directly.",
    "observance": "Unscheduled. The Continuance occurs on the death of a seat-holder and at no other time.",
    "transmission_drift": "Inherited memory is a copy, and copies of copies degrade. Detail softens. Gaps are filled by the successor's own expectation without the successor being aware of the substitution. Emotional colour survives better than fact, so each generation's account of the founding grows more vivid and less accurate at the same time.\n\nBy 130 ABP the three seats hold three incompatible first-hand memories of 12 Daazil, ASS 1494. They disagree on the hour, on who spoke first, on whether the declaration was made in the Spire or on the terrace below it, and — most troublingly — on how many people were present. None of the three can be shown to be wrong, because Thalonian epistemology holds that first-hand inherited memory outranks any written record, and all three memories are first-hand.\n\nThe Triumvirs do not discuss it. The Grand Spire's practice of convening in closed session, publicly explained as security, is in substantial part three rulers managing a disagreement that their own state has no procedure to resolve.",
    "consequences": "The Continuance explains most of what outsiders find inexplicable about Thalonian governance: the paralysis, the isolationism, the disproportionate investment in archives, and the refusal to submit the founding to any external verification. It also means the Triumvirate cannot be decapitated in the ordinary way. A Triumvir killed cleanly is replaced within the year. A Triumvir killed in a manner that leaves nothing consumable — drowned, burned, lost at sea, destroyed by Kaekreaedhel arcane oil — severs the line permanently, and there is no established procedure for what happens then.",
    "secrecy": "There is no active conspiracy, because no one involved believes themselves to be deceiving anyone. A successor asked whether they founded the Triumvirate answers yes and passes Methraug's oath-fire without flinching. The knowledge that the seats have turned over exists only as an administrative shadow: the sealed chamber, the excluded cult, the portfolio recesses, the prohibition on inscription. Any investigator would have to assemble it from absences."
    "the_unit": "A remove is one act of consumption. First remove means the holder consumed the person who lived the memory. Seventh remove means six mouths in between. Removes are counted per memory, not per person, so a single individual may hold a first-remove account of a border skirmish and a ninth-remove account of the founding, and will be ranked on whichever serves them.\n\nA memory at first remove is called clear. Beyond the fourth it is called soft. Beyond the seventh, Thalonian usage stops treating it as memory at all and calls it inheritance, which is polite for hearsay.",
    "history": "The Reckoning formalised during the Consolidation Phase, when the Triumvirate needed a criterion for magister appointment that looked meritocratic, could not be gamed by wealth, and excluded every subrace by construction. Counting removes satisfied all three. Its unintended effect was to convert memory into the most valuable asset class in the state within four generations.",
    "execution": "The Sphere of the Inner maintains the register. On the death of any Ael'voriin, the consuming heir presents before an Inner assessor and recites; the assessor records which memories were transferred and at what remove, and issues the house a revised standing. Recitation is exhausting and takes days. Assessors are drawn from the Cult of the Sentinel's Archive and serve fixed terms specifically so that no assessor accumulates enough register knowledge to sell it.",
    "participants_and_key_roles": "Ael'voriin houses; Inner assessors; the register-keepers at Ael'theryn. Lesser nobles and regional governors participate at reduced scrutiny. Subraces are excluded entirely — a Zaetaedhel or Kaemisaedhel household may practise elder-consumption privately, but no remove they hold is registrable, which is the mechanism by which advisory roles stay advisory.",
    "observance": "On death, and at the decennial audit of the register.",
    "dilution_and_taboo": "Consuming a non-Kaelotaedhel is the memory equivalent of interbreeding and carries the same penalty canon assigns to it: exile, or erasure from the records. The reasoning offered publicly is purity. The reasoning that actually animates enforcement is contamination — a foreign memory entering a noble line cannot be extracted without severing everything transmitted after it, which would void every remove the house has accumulated downstream.\n\nHouses therefore police their own consumption more strictly than the Sphere ever could. An accusation of dilution, even unproven, has ended lines.",
    "forgery": "The register can be gamed, and the method has a name it is unwise to use aloud. **Seeding**: a house selects a servant or client, feeds them a curated set of memories across decades, then consumes them, laundering a fabricated provenance into an apparently shortened remove. The forged memory is real in every respect except origin.\n\nSeeding is detectable only by inconsistency — a seeded account will fail to corroborate against an independent holder of the same event. The Sphere of the Inner has limited appetite for that comparison, since a systematic audit would expose how much of the register is soft, and the register's authority rests on nobody asking.",
    "institutional_conflict": "The Sphere of Treasure has argued for four centuries that registered memory is property and therefore taxable, auditable, and transferable by instrument. The Sphere of the Inner holds that memory is sacred and the sacred is not weighed. The Inner has won every exchange, on the strength of the doctrine rather than the argument, and the Treasure has responded by taxing everything adjacent — funerary apparatus, assessor fees, recitation chambers — which produces a substantial revenue stream from a thing the state maintains cannot be valued.",
    "summary": "Every soul in Siniath would swear, and none deny. The Edict made a single oath universal across the continent for the first time, completing the Consolidation Phase and establishing the legal architecture under which Thalon still governs in the Sixth Age.",
    "enactment": "Promulgated from Ael'theryn in MV 12580, in the aftermath of the Twisted Revolt and the purge that followed it. The Triumvirate's problem was not rebellion — that had been broken — but the impossibility of distinguishing a pacified subject from a waiting one. An oath solved the problem by relocating it: what could not be detected could at least be made costly.",
    "the_carving": "The Edict is not a spoken oath and not a signature. It is carved into the palm of the swearer by the fire of the Fiery Judge, administered by the Cult of the Fiery Reckoning, and it does not heal. The carving holds because Methraug's fire tests emotional truth rather than stated fact, which means the Edict cannot be sworn falsely and cannot be sworn under reservation. What it can be is sworn narrowly.",
    "scope_and_limits": "The Edict binds the saying, not the thing. It takes utterance and it takes naming. It does not take memory, thought, belief, or grief, and it was never drafted to — those lie beyond what Methraug's fire can reach, since the fire judges what a swearer means rather than what a swearer holds.\n\nThe practical effect on a bound subject is precise and strange. They remember everything. They simply cannot say it. A proscribed name will not leave the mouth. A proscribed year, a proscribed count, a proscribed word for a proscribed act — all present, all unreachable. Subjects describe the sensation as the word being there and the tongue refusing it, which is why the common Kaekreaedhel term for the bound is tongue-bound rather than unmade.\n\nThe drafters knew the limit. The Sphere of the Inner argued for an oath reaching memory itself and was overruled, partly because the Cult of the Fiery Reckoning would not administer it and partly because the Kaelotaedhel Purges had demonstrated two centuries earlier what erasing memory at scale does to the arcane environment.",
    "the_tolerance_clause": "The Edict's much-cited mandate of religious tolerance is not a liberal provision. A universal oath required a universal administering authority, and no single cult could reach every settlement on the continent. The tolerance clause was the price of getting all seven cults of the Zæsulsil Pahnir to co-sign enforcement, and it bought the Fiery Reckoning's monopoly on the carving itself in exchange for the suspension of orthodoxy campaigns against the melancholic and skeptical sects. Periods of suppression before MV 12580 are therefore historical; periods after are violations.",
    "enforcement": "An uncarved palm is grounds for detention anywhere in Siniath. Carvings are inspected at every arcane barrier, at the terrace levies, and at entry to any Ael'voriin holding. Bindbreaker units retain the authority to compel a swearer to attempt a proscribed utterance, which proves nothing but establishes compliance and is used mainly as intimidation.",
    "exemptions": "The three Triumvirs are unsworn. The stated reason is that the sovereign cannot swear to itself. The Cult of the Fiery Reckoning's own senior officiants are also unsworn, on the grounds that the administering hand cannot be bound by what it administers.",
    "unintended_effects": "The Edict's limitation to utterance produced the bark loophole within a generation. Carving is not saying. Hesyaziz rune-bark accepts what the mouth will not release, and the wood is sacred and may not be cut. See traditions.the_grove_reading.\n\nThe secondary effect was demographic. The Edict made departure attractive to anyone with something to say, and the Kaekreaedhel diaspora through the Web of the Hidden Flame accelerated sharply after MV 12580. Kormistahl's exile communities date much of their oral tradition to the two centuries following."
The archive receives it whole.\n\nThe rite prohibits evaluation at every stage. A scribe may not omit, correct, annotate or query. The doctrine is that the grove records and the scribe conveys, and that judgment inserted between the two is a form of cutting.",
    "the_loophole": "The Unity Edict binds utterance and naming. It does not bind the hand. A bound subject who cannot say a name can cut it, and hesyaziz bark takes the cut and grows the letters wide.\n\nThe practice among the eastern-slope Kaekreaedhel and among Kaemisaedhel client clans is to go out silent and mark the grove — names the Edict took, years, counts, the words for things that have no permitted word. The scribes find these marks at Veil-Lifting. The rite forbids them to evaluate. They transcribe. The archive files. The treason is now holy, unweighed, and permanent.\n\nEverything in that chain is lawful. Nothing in it can be undone without breaking something the state needs more.",
    "state_posture": "The Sphere of the Inner is aware. It has been aware for most of a millennium, and it protects the loophole, because the alternative is a ruling that the archive is contaminated — and the archive's unweighed sanctity is the whole of the Inner's claim to authority over every other Sphere. An Inner that admits the record is dirty is an Inner that can be audited by the Treasure.\n\nSo the doctrine hardens instead. Each generation of Inner theologians produces a more elaborate argument for why the grove cannot lie, and each argument makes the next one harder to retract.",
Hesyaziz standing in closed-canopy rainforest does not burn on its own; the operation requires arcane oil in quantity, of the kind used at the Burning Cradle, and it is expensive, slow, and impossible to conduct quietly.\n\nOfficially these are sanitations of anomaly-corrupted wood. No burning has ever been recorded as a response to what the bark said, because recording that would require saying what the bark said. The ash goes up the coast on the prevailing wind toward the strait, and the exile communities of Kormistahl have built a substantial oral tradition on what arrives there."
## The Contaminated Archive
## The Contaminated Archive
Thalon holds two records of its own founding, and only one of them is accurate.
The first is the memory the Triumvirs carry. It is first-hand, it outranks every written source by doctrine, and it has passed through six mouths since 12 Daazil, ASS 1494. Each transmission softened it. Each successor filled the gaps without noticing that they were gaps. Emotional weight came through intact and detail did not, so what the seventh Elyndor remembers of the founding is vivid, certain, moving, and substantially invented — and disagrees with what the seventh Thalira remembers, and with what the seventh Vorian remembers, on the hour, on the order of speaking, on the place, and on how many were in the room.
The second record is bark. Hesyaziz does not forget, does not soften, and does not fill in. Marks cut into it in MV 11100 are the same marks now.
The state has arranged matters so that it cannot consult the accurate one. Not by prohibition — the groves are sacred, the transcriptions are filed, the archive is open to any Ael'voriin who asks. By doctrine. Inherited memory outranks record. A Triumvir who reads a grove transcription contradicting their own recollection has encountered an error in the transcription, by definition, and there is no procedure for concluding otherwise.
And the transcriptions are not clean. For five centuries the eastern slopes have been cutting into the same sacred wood the state relies on — names the Edict took, years, counts, the word for what was done at a particular place in a particular season. The scribes transcribe it because the rite forbids them to judge. The registrars file it because the archive is holy and the holy is not weighed. So the archive of Thalon now contains, interleaved with its own founding documents and indistinguishable from them in status, a continuous five-hundred-year testimony by the people it erased.
The Sphere of the Inner knows. It has known for most of a millennium and it says nothing, because the ruling that would clean the archive is the same ruling that destroys it. Declare the groves contaminated and the archive becomes a thing that can be wrong. A thing that can be wrong can be audited. The Sphere of Treasure has waited four hundred years for exactly that opening.
So the Inner defends the loophole and calls the defence piety, and every generation of its theologians builds the argument higher.
The consequence is the part worth playing. If the Triumvirate ever needs to establish what actually happened at its founding — to settle a succession, to answer a claim from Kormistahl, to determine whether the seats have in fact been continuous — the only surviving accurate account of MV 11100 is cut into rune-bark in the eastern groves, in a hand that belongs to no Kaelotaedhel, annotated in the margins for five hundred years with the names of people the state has no permitted word for.
Thalon's truest history was kept for it by the twisted line. It is sitting in the archive. Nobody has read it, because reading it is not what the rite is for.
## The Dilution Gambit (Sixth Age hooks, unresolved)
Status: **accepted** · Kind: **prose** · Version: **1**
## The Dilution Gambit — Sixth Age hooks
Deliberately unresolved. The Sixth Age is the play era; these are pressures, not events. None has an outcome written.
**The gambit itself.** Dilution runs both ways, and someone among the two-percent remnant has worked it out. Consuming a non-Kaelotaedhel contaminates a noble line permanently — the foreign memory cannot be extracted without severing every remove transmitted after it. So a Kaekreaedhel with something to say arranges to be eaten. Their mother's name, the year, the count, everything the Edict took the saying of, arrives inside an Ael'voriin house at first remove, unforgeable, in the first person, and by the state's own doctrine it now outranks every written record that contradicts it.
The house cannot expel it. Cannot report it. Cannot purge it without voiding four hundred years of accumulated standing. Open questions: does the house comply, conceal, or convert? How many times has this already happened without being recognised? Who taught the remnant the mechanism, and what did they want?
**A seat that cannot be filled.** A Triumvir dies in a manner leaving nothing consumable. There is no procedure. The remaining two hold first-hand memories of a founding they now cannot corroborate, and the vacant portfolio is Military, or Surveillance, depending on what the table needs.
**A scribe who reads.** The Grove Reading forbids evaluation, which has held for a millennium because scribes are lot-assigned and transcriptions are sealed unread. One scribe breaks the seal. What they find is not a single heresy but a five-century archive, and the first problem is that they cannot report it without saying it aloud.
**The first refused term.** A magister declines a fifty-year appointment. Nobody has ever declined. There is no mechanism for declining, which means there is also no mechanism for what the Sphere does next.
**A veil that fails.** Border illusion veils are the oldest continuous working in the state, and the Triumvirs who set them are six removes gone. What was actually done at the border in MV 12870 exists now only as a soft memory. Nobody currently alive knows how the veils work; they know how they remember being told the veils work.
**Kormistahl tests the strait.** The exiles have been receiving ash and song for centuries and have assembled something from it. Whether what they have assembled is accurate is a separate question from whether they believe it.
**An anomaly that is a name.** The Kaelotaedhel Purges backfired and canon says so. Erased history returns as arcane disturbance, and the Sphere of the Inner researches tazri countermeasures against what it files as Hiniel anomalies. Nobody has considered that the anomalies are structured, or that Hiniel is the Sentinel of Ages and the deity whose cult runs the erasures.
## Patch: add succession and continuity section to the Thalon entity
  "target_entity_id": "countries_and_continents.continents.siniath.nations.thalon",
  "value": "The Second Triumvirate was declared in MV 11100 and the same three names hold its seats in MV 13000, a span of 1,900 years against a Kaelotaedhel lifespan of 260 to 300. The names are offices. Each has been held by approximately seven individuals across six successions, and each succession is a Continuance — the consuming of the dying holder by their designated successor, transferring portfolio, name and first-person memory in a single rite performed beneath the Grand Spire without witness or record. See traditions.the_continuance.\n\nBecause inherited memory arrives as lived experience, a sitting Triumvir sincerely remembers founding the state and will swear to it under Methraug's fire without deception. The continuity Thalon claims is therefore not a lie maintained by the Triumvirate; it is a belief held by it. The three current holders stand six removes from MV 11100, and their accounts of the founding have drifted far enough apart to be mutually incompatible on hour, place, sequence and attendance — a disagreement the state has no procedure to adjudicate, since its own doctrine holds first-hand inherited memory to outrank all record."
## Patch: replace Thalon climate description with map-derived data
Status: **accepted** · Kind: **field_patch** · Version: **1**
```json
{
  "operation": "set",
  "path": "/content/territories/climate",
  "target_entity_id": "countries_and_continents.continents.siniath.nations.thalon",
  "value": "Predominantly tropical. Map authority gives tropical seasonal forest across roughly 56% of the territory and tropical rainforest across roughly 31%, with savanna and wetland belts at roughly 4.5% each and small temperate deciduous and temperate rainforest pockets making up the remaining 3%. The year runs on wet and dry seasons rather than temperate ones.\n\nThis supersedes the earlier article description of temperate northern zones with 800 to 1,200 mm annual precipitation, per the standing authority rule that map-derived geography prevails over article geography. Culture, settlements and named features are unaffected: Ael'theryn remains the capital, and the marble-veined highlands, rune-etched valleys and terrace farms remain as local features rather than regional climate indicators.\n\nThe practical consequence is that the hesyaziz groves stand in closed-canopy rainforest. They are difficult to survey, difficult to reach, and cannot be burned without arcane oil in quantity — which is why grove sanitations are expensive, slow, and impossible to conduct without the coast noticing."
