Proposed value
The war divides into four phases, defined by terrain rather than by victories. No phase ends in a decisive engagement; each ends when the ground changes.
[ul]
- I. The Crossing (1269-1274). Five years. The Medestul is forced, the Vekh'Zural warden-march burned, and the open country south of the fens taken at speed. Imperial doctrine remembers this phase as proof of the Grand Army's superiority. It was proof only that the Zegtuzsos would not fight in the open twice.
- II. The Drowned Years (1274-1286). Twelve years in the Ihtaa Fens and the reason the war took thirty-six years rather than ten. Revakgol attempted to cross the wetland belt on raised military road and lost a decade to ambush, fever and subsidence. The Busyl Causeway disaster of 1281 ends the attempt.
- III. The Road War (1286-1297). Eleven years of methodical reduction along the Saark cliff-line, once the Empire accepted that the fens had to be drained and flanked rather than crossed. The seventy catalogued actions of this phase form the war-academy syllabus known as the Seventy Claws of the Northern Campaign. Ends with the breaking of Netin'Fojaa.
- IV. The Cliff Sieges (1297-1305). Eight years in the highlands. The Paathur falls at Urtkaa in 1299; the last Mulaagjuns hold Kaagaat until 1305.
