Great Wyrm War — campaign phases, seven engagements, seven war locations

Grounded on military_conflicts.great_wyrm_war and history.events.the_great_wyrm_war (canon_json); cross-read history.characters.zelguu_kairtis, settlements.vusokaar, species.firgol.sentient.dovagoraan.zegtuzsos, countries_and_continents.continents.silgolt.nations.revakgol.empire_of_revakgol. Template guideline: canon/template_guideline/conflict.md. Coined names from generate_names (sigtaara, seed 'wyrmwar-battles') and lookup_lexicon roots murfetyh/tin (river), netin (ash/coal), fojaa (gate), ga'hkoosyh/lusrohook (mountain/rock). No canon names were altered except a spelling correction flagged in item 3.

Ask

The Great Wyrm War is 36 years long and contains zero named battles. military_conflicts.great_wyrm_war is the only entity of its type in the index. This package gives the war a campaign spine: four phases, seven child conflicts, and the seven geographic features those conflicts happen on.

Grounding

Everything here is built outward from assertions the canon entry already makes:

  • The war opens when Revakgol crosses the Medestul's northern border and burns the watch-posts of Vekh'Zural.
  • It is fought by attrition and siege, not decisive battle, with fortified roads and supply lines built as the army advances.
  • War academies teach the "Seventy Claws of the Northern Campaign"; Saarotsos children chant the names of fallen citadels.
  • It ends in 1305 AZN with a final mountain bastion surrounded and the Paathur slain.

Items

Patches to the parent (3) — timeline block (currently empty on the military_conflict entity, though the event twin has the dates), a working summary to replace the current opening-sentence fragment, and a new content.campaign_phases section.

Child conflicts (7) — Vekh'Zural, Sosaaz, Busyl Causeway, the Yuliz Sieges, Netin'Fojaa, Urtkaa, Kaagaat.

Locations (7) — the Medestul, Vekh'Zural, the Ihtaa Fens, the Busyl Causeway, the Saark, Netin'Fojaa, Kaagaat.

Relationship edges (7) — parent-to-child links from the war to each engagement.

Design notes

Dual naming. Each engagement carries an imperial name and a Zegtuzsos name. The parent entry closes on the argument that two peoples remember the same flame differently; at present only Kaemisyol's side has a vocabulary. The paired names put that thesis into the record structure rather than leaving it as an assertion in the legacy section.

Why 36 years. Twelve of them are the Ihtaa Fens. The duration currently reads as an assertion with no mechanism behind it. Phase II supplies one, and the Busyl Causeway disaster gives the Imperial Logistics Corps — which the aftermath text founds and then never explains — a cause.

Seventy Claws. Defined here as a war-academy syllabus of seventy catalogued actions from the Road War phase, of which Yuliz and Netin'Fojaa are the two every officer knows.

Kaagaat was never stormed. Kaemisyol declined the assault. This is the tactical fact underneath the political choice canon already records: storming it would have killed the last Mulaagjuns capable of surrendering the Paathur system he wanted intact.

Open questions

  1. The Medestul. Canon says "the Medestul's northern border," which reads as either a river or a territory. This package treats it as a river forming the frontier. If it is a province or a people, six of the seven locations still stand but the opening campaign needs restaging.
  2. Entity type location does not yet exist in the index. A template guideline exists at canon/template_guideline/location.md, but no canon entity uses the type. These seven would be the first. Alternative: file them as geography or fold them into the conflict entities as terrain sections.
  3. Twin entities. military_conflicts.great_wyrm_war holds the prose; history.events.the_great_wyrm_war holds the dates and every incoming relation. The patches here target the military_conflict entity. A decision on which is the spine is still outstanding and is not resolved by this package.
  4. Coined names are non-canon candidates. Sosaaz, Busyl, Yuliz, Urtkaa, Kaagaat, Ihtaa, Saark come from generate_names. Netin'Fojaa is a lexicon compound (netin = ash/coal, fojaa = gate) and the translate tool warns that its grammar ordering is not fully applied. Rename freely.
  5. No Zegtuzsos are named. The Paathur killed at Urtkaa and the twelve Mulaagjuns remain anonymous. Deliberate — that was a separate gap and is not addressed here.

A thirty-six year war of conquest (1269-1305 AZN) in which the Empire of Revakgol, under Kaemisyol, subjugated the Zegtuzsos clans of northeastern Silgolt. Fought by attrition, road-building and siege rather than decisive battle. Ended in negotiated surrender: the Paathur system was preserved beneath imperial authority rather than dismantled. NOTE FOR REVIEWER: the current summary spells the Vaazaa'Dovaajun's birth name 'Zelguh Kairtis'; history.characters.zelguu_kairtis and its file path both use 'Zelguu'.

Proposed value

The war divides into four phases, defined by terrain rather than by victories. No phase ends in a decisive engagement; each ends when the ground changes.

[ul]
- I. The Crossing (1269-1274). Five years. The Medestul is forced, the Vekh'Zural warden-march burned, and the open country south of the fens taken at speed. Imperial doctrine remembers this phase as proof of the Grand Army's superiority. It was proof only that the Zegtuzsos would not fight in the open twice.
- II. The Drowned Years (1274-1286). Twelve years in the Ihtaa Fens and the reason the war took thirty-six years rather than ten. Revakgol attempted to cross the wetland belt on raised military road and lost a decade to ambush, fever and subsidence. The Busyl Causeway disaster of 1281 ends the attempt.
- III. The Road War (1286-1297). Eleven years of methodical reduction along the Saark cliff-line, once the Empire accepted that the fens had to be drained and flanked rather than crossed. The seventy catalogued actions of this phase form the war-academy syllabus known as the Seventy Claws of the Northern Campaign. Ends with the breaking of Netin'Fojaa.
- IV. The Cliff Sieges (1297-1305). Eight years in the highlands. The Paathur falls at Urtkaa in 1299; the last Mulaagjuns hold Kaagaat until 1305.

The Burning of Vekh'Zural

Engagement

There was almost no fighting. The posts held between four and nine wardens each and were built to see, not to hold. Where resistance occurred it lasted minutes. Imperial accounts record fourteen Revakgol dead across the entire march.

What the burning achieved was not military but temporal: it cost the Zegtuzsos the interval between detection and invasion that their whole northern defensive doctrine assumed they would have.

Overview

Not a battle. Vekh'Zural was a warden-march of roughly thirty watch-posts strung along the north bank of the Medestul, garrisoned by signalmen rather than soldiers. On a single night in 1269 AZN, advance columns of the Grand Army crossed in darkness at multiple points and fired the posts before their wardens could pass a warning north.

The Paathur learned of the invasion from the fires themselves.

Two Names

The Saarotsos call it the First Light and teach it as the model opening operation - surprise, dispersal, simultaneity. The Zegtuzsos call it the Night of Smoke and do not teach it at all. It appears in clutch songs as a list of thirty names in fixed order, which is the order the posts burned.

Vital Statistics
Outcome

The Grand Clutch is called. Twelve Mulaagjuns answer. The war begins with the Zegtuzsos already reacting rather than positioning.

Result
Revakgol success; Zegtuzsos northern watch destroyed

The Crossing at Sosaaz

Tin'Sosaaz

military_conflicts.crossing_at_sosaaz military_conflict

First pitched engagement of the Great Wyrm War, 1270 AZN. A contested river assault below the Medestul confluence that the Zegtuzsos lost badly enough to abandon open battle for the rest of the war.

Content

Consequence

Sosaaz is the decision point of the entire war. Having lost four Juns in a day, the Zegtuzsos leadership concluded that they could not meet the Grand Army in open ground and withdrew into the fens and the cliff country. Everything that made the next thirty-five years slow follows from a battle that took less than a day.

Engagement

Revakgol crossed on a broad front rather than a narrow one, accepting higher losses in the water in exchange for denying the defenders a point to concentrate against. Kori-duelists went across first and held the far bank while the fording columns came over behind them. The Zegtuzsos committed their reserve early against what they read as the main thrust and found it was one of five.

Overview

A year after Vekh'Zural, the main body of the Grand Army forced the Medestul at a fording point below the confluence. Four Juns contested the crossing under a Mulaagjun of the river clans. They were broken inside a day.

Imperial doctrine treats Sosaaz as the model river assault and it is the first action in every Saarotsos officer's training.

Two Names

The Red Shallows is not a poetic name. The Zegtuzsos who recorded it were counting bodies in water shallow enough to walk.

The Busyl Causeway

military_conflicts.busyl_causeway military_conflict

Revakgol's worst defeat of the Great Wyrm War, 1281 AZN. An imperial military road driven into the Ihtaa Fens was ambushed at its midpoint after the Zegtuzsos deliberately let the head of the column pass.

Content

Consequence

The causeway is where imperial logistics stops being an assumption and becomes an institution. The aftermath of the Great Wyrm War credits the founding of the first Imperial Logistics Corps to the strain of long campaigning; the specific failure it was founded to prevent is this one. Revakgol never again attempted to cross the Ihtaa Fens. Phase III begins with the decision to drain and flank instead.

Engagement

The Zegtuzsos had been watching the causeway advance for four years and had prepared the crossing point for two. They let the vanguard pass unmolested - the discipline this required is the detail imperial accounts find hardest to explain - and struck the centre, cutting the column in three. Fascine sections were fired and the roadbed collapsed into the fen under the weight of retreating troops.

Two Tufae generals died. The vanguard, isolated on the far side with no supply and no road behind it, was destroyed over the following eleven days.

Overview

Seven years into the Drowned Years, the Empire attempted to solve the Ihtaa Fens the way it had solved every other obstacle: by building through them. The Busyl Causeway was a raised stone-and-fascine road intended to carry the Grand Army across the wetland belt in a season.

It was ambushed at the midpoint in 1281, with roughly a third of the column already past the killing ground.

Two Names

The Long Fault is an engineering term the Empire adopted as a euphemism. The Zegtuzsos name it the Gift of Mud, which is not gratitude but attribution - the fens did the work, and the songs are careful to say so.

Engagement

Each citadel was invested rather than assaulted, its water traced and cut, its approaches walled off by fortified road. The first fell in seven months, the second in five. The third held eleven.

The defenders of the third were permitted to walk out under arms. Kaemisyol's Tufae recorded this as clemency and used it in every subsequent negotiation.

Legacy

The chant Saarotsos children learn is a list of fallen citadels in the order they fell, and the list begins here. Officers who trace their command lineage to the Wyrmfront are almost always tracing it through a Yuliz siege line.

Overview

The centrepiece of the Road War. Three citadels cut into the Saark cliff-line, taken one after another over four years by a Grand Army that had finally accepted the pace the terrain demanded.

No relief force ever came. This is the fact that matters more than the sieges themselves.

Two Names

To the Zegtuzsos these are the Four Winters, and the memory is not of the sieges but of the silence between them - four years in which twelve Mulaagjuns had sworn to answer and did not. The walking-out of the third citadel is remembered less as mercy than as the moment surrender became thinkable.

Content

Consequence

Netin'Fojaa ends the Road War and opens the Cliff Sieges. With the pass held, the highland clan-holds could be reached individually and could no longer reinforce one another.

Engagement

He burned it open. Kori was used at a scale the war had not previously seen and the Kori Codexes were standardized within a generation partly on the basis of what was recorded here.

The imperial name is literal rather than figurative. After the fighting the floor of the pass lay under coal-ash to a depth that killed the ground; nothing grew there for a generation and the road through it was built on ash rather than soil.

Overview

A single pass, the only practical route from the Saark cliff country into the northeastern highlands. The Zegtuzsos had held it for twenty-five years by holding nothing else - every other approach was worse.

Kaemisyol came north for it personally.

Two Names

The Zegtuzsos call the pass the Throat, and had called it that long before the war - it is a description of the terrain. That the Empire renamed it for what it did there, and that the Zegtuzsos kept the older name, is the whole disagreement in miniature.

PROPOSAL, not canon. Netin'Fojaa is a lexicon compound: netin (ash, coal) + fojaa (gate). The translate tool warns that sigtaara grammar ordering is not fully applied to such compounds.

Content

Consequence

Canon requires the Paathur's death before the final surrender, and Urtkaa supplies it - but supplies it badly, on purpose. The Empire got the death it needed and no victory it could stage. There was no field, no banner taken, no witness of rank.

The Zegtuzsos got a martyrdom with no reliable account of it. Within two generations there were four incompatible versions of how the Paathur died, and the imperial version - a duel, honourably given - is the one the clutch songs specifically deny.

Engagement

The engagement itself is militarily minor and appears in the Seventy Claws only as a footnote to the pursuit doctrine it illustrates. Fewer than three hundred died.

Overview

Not a set battle. A Zegtuzsos column caught while withdrawing between two highland holds, harried across two days of broken ground.

The Paathur was travelling with it. He was killed by a Kori-duelist who did not know who he had killed, and did not learn until the body was identified some weeks later by a captured Jun.

Two Names

The Unwitnessed is a Zegtuzsos coinage, and it is an accusation. The Empire simply calls it Urtkaa, after the ground.

The Siege of Kaagaat

Content

Consequence

The refusal to assault is the tactical fact underneath the political choice the parent entry already records. Storming Kaagaat would have killed the surviving Mulaagjuns, and Kaemisyol wanted the Paathur system intact and legitimate enough to govern through. A bastion taken by storm has no one left with the standing to surrender it.

The delegation went to Vusokaar in 1305. The Paathur system was preserved beneath the Dovahrein; imperial garrisons were admitted at key sites; the Mulaagjuns kept authority over Zegtuzsos villages.

Engagement

Kaemisyol invested it in the winter of 1303 and did not assault it. Rings of fortified road were built around the mountain over the following two years - the same methodical technique used at Yuliz, applied to a target that could not be starved out quickly because it sat on its own water.

The defenders were not short of food when they surrendered. They were short of reasons.

Overview

The last hold. Canon records the war's end as a delegation sent from a surrounded mountain bastion to Vusokaar under a white-scorched banner; Kaagaat is that bastion.

It was never stormed.

Two Names

The Last Clutch is the Zegtuzsos name and is used without irony. The Empire has no distinctive name for it - it is simply Kaagaat, which in Saarotsos usage has come to mean an ending that everyone survived.

The Medestul

locations.the_medestul location river

The river frontier between Revakgol and the Zegtuzsos clans in the Third Age, and the start line of the Great Wyrm War.

Content

Character

Fordable at perhaps a dozen points in the dry season and at none in the wet. The Zegtuzsos watch-system at Vekh'Zural existed because of it: the river bought them the time to concentrate, and the fords told them where concentration would be needed.

Overview

A broad, slow river running west to east across northeastern Silgolt, forming the border the Empire of Revakgol crossed in 1269 AZN.

REVIEWER NOTE: canon says only that Revakgol 'crossed the Medestul's northern border'. This entity reads the Medestul as a river. It could equally be a province, a march, or a people, in which case this record should be withdrawn and the opening campaign restaged.

Role In The War

Crossed at night in 1269 by advance columns who burned the Vekh'Zural watch-line. Forced properly in 1270 at the shallows below the confluence, at the battle the Zegtuzsos call the Red Shallows.

Vekh'Zural

locations.vekh_zural location warden-march

A Zegtuzsos signal-chain of roughly thirty watch-posts along the north bank of the Medestul, burned in a single night in 1269 AZN.

Content

Character

The posts were built of stone below and timber above, the timber specifically so that a post could be fired by its own wardens as a signal of last resort. In 1269 this worked against them: Revakgol fired the posts themselves, and the pattern of burning that reached the Paathur was indistinguishable from a general alarm with no information in it.

Legacy

The thirty post-names survive in Zegtuzsos clutch songs as a fixed-order list. The order is the order in which they burned. Nothing was rebuilt; the march is ruin and the imperial road runs past it.

Overview

Not a settlement and not a fortress line. Vekh'Zural was a warden-march: a chain of small posts, each holding four to nine wardens, sited for visibility rather than defence and connected by fire-signal.

Its purpose was to convert the Medestul from a border into a warning.

The Ihtaa Fens

locations.ihtaa_fens location wetland

A wetland belt across the northeastern approaches that cost Revakgol twelve years of the Great Wyrm War.

Content

Character

Seasonal. In high summer the peat firms enough to bear infantry on foot but not carts; in the wet season the whole belt becomes impassable and the channels move. Fever is endemic. Revakgol lost more soldiers to the water than to the Zegtuzsos in every year of Phase II.

Overview

A belt of standing water, peat and reed running roughly east-west behind the Medestul, wide enough that no army had ever crossed it in force and shallow enough that it could not be sailed.

The Zegtuzsos did not defend the fens. They lived on the far side of them and let the ground do the work.

Role In The War

The Drowned Years, 1274-1286. The Empire attempted to build the Busyl Causeway across the belt and lost the attempt and two Tufae generals in 1281. After that the fens were drained at the margins and flanked along the Saark rather than crossed.

The Saark

locations.the_saark location cliff-line

A cliff wall running along the northern edge of the Ihtaa Fens, holding the Zegtuzsos citadels reduced during the Road War.

Content

Character

Dry, windy, and defensible to a degree that made assault pointless. Water came from springs within the rock, which is why the Yuliz citadels had to be traced and cut rather than simply blockaded.

Overview

A long escarpment where the fen basin ends and the highland country begins. The Zegtuzsos cut citadels into its face rather than building on top of it - approach from below is exposed and approach from above requires already holding the highlands.

Role In The War

The Road War, 1286-1297. Revakgol advanced along the cliff base by fortified road, reducing citadels in sequence. Three fell during the Yuliz Sieges of 1288-1291. The line ends at the pass the Empire renamed Netin'Fojaa.

Netin'Fojaa

Netin'Fojaa

locations.netin_fojaa location pass

The only practical pass from the Saark cliff country into the northeastern highlands. Burned open in 1294 AZN and dead ground for a generation afterward.

Also known as The Ash Gate, The Throat

Content

Character

Steep-sided, roughly two thousand paces long, with no parallel route that does not add a season's march. Holding it held the highlands. Losing it lost them.

Legacy

One of the two engagements of the Seventy Claws that every Saarotsos officer can name. Zegtuzsos travellers passing through it are traditionally silent for its full length.

Overview

A narrow defile at the eastern end of the Saark. The Zegtuzsos name for it, the Throat, is older than the war and purely descriptive. The imperial name is not: netin is ash or coal, fojaa is gate, and the Empire named it for what it did there.

Role In The War

Taken in 1294 by Kaemisyol in person, using Kori at a scale not previously seen in the war. The floor of the pass afterward lay under coal-ash deep enough to kill the ground; the imperial road through it was laid on ash rather than soil and nothing grew in the defile for roughly sixty years.

Kaagaat

locations.kaagaat location mountain fastness

The final Zegtuzsos mountain bastion of the Great Wyrm War, besieged 1303-1305 AZN and surrendered rather than taken.

Also known as The Last Clutch

Content

Character

Effectively unstormable by the standards of the age and effectively unstarvable in the short term, since its water was internal and its stores deep. What it could not do was end. There was nowhere further to withdraw to and nobody left to relieve it.

Legacy

Still inhabited. Garrisoned by the Empire under the terms of the surrender, and administered by a Mulaagjun, which makes it the clearest physical statement of what the settlement of 1305 actually was. In Saarotsos usage the name has drifted into an idiom for an ending everyone survived, which Zegtuzsos speakers find intolerable.

Overview

A highland fastness built into and under a mountain, holding its own springs. The last seat of Zegtuzsos independent authority and the place the surviving Mulaagjuns gathered after Urtkaa.

Role In The War

Invested in the winter of 1303. Kaemisyol declined to assault it and instead built rings of fortified road around the mountain over twenty-six months. The delegation that went to Vusokaar under the white-scorched banner in 1305 came from here.
